As many will know from reading my previous ops, I have recently gone through a bit of a flare-up with eczema and am therefore going to give you my views on many of the skin products that I’ve tried over the last few months.
I’ve only ever suffered from having a dry scalp on a couple of occasions in my life, at which times I’ve successfully used a shampoo, called Polytar. Over the past few years, for normal everyday shampooing, I use Fructis by Laboratoire Garnier and it’s never given me a single problem. During my recent skin problems, my Fructis ran out one day and so I had to resort to using a bottle of Pantene that I had stored away in the cupboard. – Huge mistake! The following day my scalp started to become dry and just by coincidence, a couple of days later I was due to see the Dermatologist. “Use T-Gel” he said, “that will get rid of the problem straight away”. This I thought sounded like a good idea so I decided that I’d use it for a few days and then go back to my usual Fructis shampoo.
T-Gel is made in France by Johnson & Johnson and is specially formulated to fight ‘dandruff’. It is said to ‘relieve the itching and flaking’ whilst still ‘caring for your hair and leaving it shiny and manageable’.
T-Gel is recommended by Dermatologists (as was recommended to me). It does not contain coal tar and is said to have a fresh fragrance although I find the fragrance would work much better in a toilet cleaner!
It also contains salicylic acid - a commonly used scale remover, which will dissolve the built-up dead skin and it also contains Piroctone Olamine, which apparently controls dandruff by promoting an optimum scalp condition.
It is recommended that T-Gel be used 3 to 4 times a week for the first 4 weeks and then 1 to 2 times a week in order to maintain dandruff free hair.
After the first use of T-Gel I saw no result so continued to use it a couple more times, very much to my regret. My scalp dried out completely, it wasn’t flaking like dandruff but was just coming off almost like sunburnt skin. I had to wash and dry my hair twice just to get rid of it.
After some thought it then occurred to me that my condition was not caused by the bacteria that causes dandruff but was simply a dry skin condition and I therefore wondered if the Dermatologist should have recommended it at all. I went back to using Fructis and within a couple of days my scalp was back to normal. Then I decided to write an op on it on Ciao and went on the Wellbeing website to check the price. On doing so, I then discovered that as well as the anti-dandruff shampoo, T-Gel also do a shampoo specifically for eczema and dermatitis. – oops! I’d obviously bought the wrong one!
So here’s my verdict, at £5 a bottle, T-Gel is pretty expensive for a shampoo. If you’ve got Dandruff then chances are it could do you some good but for Eczema? …Well, it certainly didn’t help me!

If this is the same one as I am using with tha coal tar extract it is for scalp psoriasis which I have(and it works) and seborrhoeic dermatitis. I would try the one for your type of skin problem if I were you as I find this stuff brilliant. If its the one without coal tar for dandruff then no that doesnt work not for me either! Amanda
