So you've got all your holiday appliances, Battery powered digital camera, Digital Video Camera or Standard Video Camera, MP3 or CD player, and other battery powered appliances, trouble is.....it costs a small fortune to keep these things powered, and standard Nickel Cadmium ( NiCads) Batteries just don't last very long or hold enough power to work the camera, and on top of this these batteries have a memory which needs to be completely discharged otherwise afer a short period of a few recharging cycles thy wont hold a charge...
So is there an answer to all this inconvenience...fortunately there is...

You may have heard the term NiMH ( Nickel Metal Hydride) Batteries, these are rechargeable, come in standard sizes AAA, AA, C & D sizes plus specialised sizes for Video Cameras, the can be reacharged many times without any loss in performance, cost about the same as NiCads, but are much more effiecient at what they do...

By way of an example....my Sanyo Digital camera runs off 2 standard AA 1.5 volt Bateries, these work the Flash Gun, Back Screen Monitor, View Finder and Camera Functions, using 2 Duracel Batteries my camera will take about half a dozen high spec pictures using the flash gun and back screen view finder....
Using NiCad rechargeable AA Batteries, on the same high Format pictures, the camera will take about 15 pictures before a fresh set of batteries are called for..
Using MiMH rechargeable Batteries in the same circumstances the camera will take about 60 High Format pictures....

So the proof of the pudding is in the eating...these NiMH batteries are excellent, you can buy a special NiMH Battery Charger that will charge four batteries at a time, it will deal with Nicads also and other AAA, C and D cell batteries for around £15...
AA Batteries are in the region of £5 for 4 and at this price for those of you with a digital camera or MP3/CD player you can afford to have 3 or 4 sets on stand by, another advantage of this type of battery is that there are no memory problems like there are with Nicads, so you can recharge half charged batteries without any problems..

My advice and verdict..if you want better reliability, get rid of your tired Nicad batteries and invest in some NiMH batteries, you wont regret it, particularly if you have a digital camera..these are a sound investment and a good compliment to your holiday pictures, and prevent you loosing your temper when the batteries die on you just as you're taking that once in a lifetime photo......
a good place to order them on the internet is...www.mx2.com

How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
A good jargon-busting op - have found it very helpful as have just purchased a Minolta Dimage 5 camera, and was not amused when I saw that it took AA batteries (4 of em!). I might have just spent EUR 1100 on my new toy and two memory cards, but did they include rechargeable NiMH batteries with it? Nope! Fortunately the shop assistant did have the decency to tell me that I would be well advised to get NiMH batteries at the same time as I bought the camera, as they were also cheaper at Schiphol airport. Proof that old ops are not ones to be ashamed of! Mike

A lot of places seem to think it's okay to hike the prices up of these batteries. I use them in my personal cassette player, a two hour charge of four battereis gives me well over a weeks use of it and I use the personal stereo a hell of a lot. Prices here in a lot of places are around nine quid a pack of four AA's M :)
