For anyone that has seen either my drunken ramblings on here or on ciaochatting you will know that I have given up smoking. Today is day 20 or something but basically I am in week 3. I have had a couple of lapses (mainly after alcohol) but essentially I am there and the NiQuitin CQ Lozenges have helped this. But lets get this straight - unless you really want to quit you never will.
For me the turning point was my mum. I know it’s a disgusting habit that will eventually kill me (that’s presuming my liver doesn’t give out first) and although I meant to give up it never actually happened and being 28 and having smoked for 12 years I didn’t even know if I would be able to give up. Then my mum had a routine mammogram and it showed a lump that they biopsied for cancer. Now my mum has never smoked, barely drinks and eats a very healthy diet and exercises and I was thinking how unfair this all was that I live the high life, smoke, drink, etc and am fine. I vowed that if my mum had Cancer I would give up there and then. The biopsies came back as totally normal
and my mum was fine but I decided to give up anyway. If I couldn't do it for my mum then I couldn't for it for anyone.
I read Manumas22 reviews on the inhalator (thank you so much Michelle for helping me) and popped down the shops and bought it and tried it for a few days but it just didn’t hit the spot. For me it was like smoking a Silk Cut – frankly why would you bother and my mood by day 2 was so terrible my secretary refused to speak to me and I holed myself in my office. By lunchtime on day 2 I had enough I went down the newsagents to get a pack of my beloved cigarettes and very sensibly went into the chemist next door instead. The pharmacist whom I have never met before sat me down, calmed me down told me how well I had done and recommended the lozenges. Because I used to smoke within 30 minutes of waking she told me I would need the 4mg version as opposed to the weaker 2mg version and I handed over my £8.99 (I sit there think I could have got 2 packets of fags for that!!!!!!)
On first impressions these are in a blister pack and are very similar size and shape to Strepsils lozenges. I popped one of the blister pack and did as the pharmacist told me – don’t suck just let it slowly dissolve and they said it would take between 20 – 30 minutes. After about 30 seconds I got the hit of nicotine and I literally felt myself calm down. Suitable calmed I got back in the car and began the drive back to work. Half a mile down the road I had such an overwhelming feeling of nausea I had to get out of the car as I thought I was going to be sick. There I am crouching in the gutter in the side of the street retching thinking sod this I’ll have a fag instead.
Now I have the best team of people around me in the office – I managed to get back slightly green, feeling sick and frankly needing a lie down. On reading the literature – I know what your thinking and no I didn’t read it before as that would be too sensible – it says the following
“Sometimes there can be minor side effects from giving up smoking or using the lozenges. These include
Sore throat, mouth irritation or difficulty swallowing Sleep disturbance, dizziness, headache, coughing, anxiety, irritability Feeling or being sick, hiccups, belching or wind, abnormal appetite
None of the above side effects are serious, and often wear off after a few days treatment.”
I will be honest that the first days of using these lozenges were horrible and I had every side effect listed and a few more I think. I could only suck the lozenges for a few minutes at a time or I would be sick and due to the cost of the damn things (cheaper to smoke) I used to put the half sucked lozenge back in the blister pack and have another little suck on it a bit later. They recommend using up to 10 lozenges a day – if I hit 4 I was lucky to be honest.
After a few days the sickness feeling did go although I still burping (much to my embarrassment) but no more nausea thank God. When sucking these I do feel a little nicotine kick – lets be honest its certainly no substitute to having a fag but it does calm me down a bit and takes the edge of my temper. The one thing this doesn’t do is even attempt to break the habit – for me I think smoking is partly habitual – watching Eastenders think I’ll have a fag, after a meal think I’ll have a fag. Thank God I am single or I would start having a post-coital lozenge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been buying these from the chemist in packets of 36 and they are £8.99 and available in original (tastes of absolutely nothing) or mint (tastes slightly of mint but still more nothing than mint) and you can buy them in 2mg or 4mg strengths but I would suggest speaking to your pharmacist for advice. These are available on prescription but its near on impossible to get a doctors appointment at my surgery even if you’re dying so I decided to just buy them and be done with it. However they are available on prescription.
It’s worth pointing out that these do still contain nicotine but do not contain the tar and other rubbish that cigarettes contain. When you stop taking these (they recommend using these for 12 weeks but I will have stopped taking them next week I think as I am only having 2 a day) you may still get some nicotine cravings. However they do say on the leaflet that there dependence on these is rare and lets face it – they don’t taste that great so I am more likely to get addicted to Mars Bars than these.
These will work for you if you are determined to stop the filthy habit but they won’t work unless you want them too. You can’t share a lozenge over a bottle of wine, you can’t share a lozenge after sex and you certainly can’t blow smoke rings with it – but it can help to save your life and I guess for me that’s enough. I have to give these 5 starts as the sick feelings will go and although expensive its not forever like fags are and you can get on presciption.

I cant help it. I am addicted to these lozengers now.
I buy the mint ones in a packet of 72 for £17.49.
I have now been using them since May.
Yes I also lapse (alot) whilst drinking.
I do want to pack in and have to say when money has been tight and I have bought fags because I didnt have either the £ 7.49 for 72 or the £8.99 for 36 i have actually missed the lozengers.
I know, I am weird.
Cant help it, I just like them.
