I hope this isn’t too early to be writing this review but I have stopped smoking for 4 weeks and 4 days and have been using NiQuitin CQ lonzenges to help me, and am determined to keep it up.
I had been smoking for about 12 years but was down to about 10/day weekdays and a few more weekends before I decided to quit. I had attempted to quit before, going cold turkey and using the gum but it hadn’t worked for me. With the smoking ban about to start I decided it was a good time to try again and decided on the lozenges.
Price ------ I bought my first box in Boots for £4.08p (it was on offer) for 36 lozenges at 4mg strength. They come in either 2mg – for smokers who smoke
their 1st cigarette 30mins + after waking, or 4mg for those who smoke within 30mins. Although I only smoked 10/day I had my first one pretty soon after getting up so I chose the 4mg.
They come in packs of 36 or 72 lozenges for about £8 for 36 and £12 for 72. There are a lot of offers on at the moment so you can get some good deals, and stock up. I believe they are available on prescription too, where you visit the pharmacist once a week, but I haven’t chosen this route as inconvenient for me.
I have chosen the mint flavoured lozenges but they also do non-flavoured ones.
Packaging ------------ They come in a box with brief instructions on the back and a full information leaflet inside. The lozenges are in a blister pack, like painkillers, with 12 in a pack. I find this handy so I don’t have to carry the whole box just take one pack out with me.
It also had a smoking questionnaire inside which you can fill in and then phone up to get a Stop smoking plan or alternatively you can go their website Click2Quit.
Instructions -------------- It advises you on the back that it is a 12 week programme broken down into 3 steps. Step 1 – weeks 1 to 6 – 1 lozenge every 1 to 2 hours Step 2 – weeks 7 to 9 – 1 lozenge every 2 to 4 hours Step 3 – weeks 10 to 12 – 1 lozenge every 4 to 8 hours.
During step 1 you should have at least 9 lozenges a day but no more than 15 and not to eat or drink while you having one.
The lozenge should be dissolved in the mouth, which normally takes about 30 minutes.
It also advises who shouldn’t use the lozenges – Non-smokers, under 18’s, if you have serious heart disease or have had a recent stroke, if you suffer from phenylketonuria, if you are allergic to nicotine.
My Experience - - - - I had my first one after I’d had breakfast. I felt it had a strange texture, kind of chalky and it feels like its coating your tongue. You have to suck it and move it from one side to the other of your mouth, I tuck it in my bottom gum. I have a customer facing job and I can have one and its small enough to tuck there and not look like I am sucking on a sweet.
It has a pleasant mint taste which lasts throughout the whole of the lozenge. For the first few days I did have a sore throat but I can’t say if this was due to the lozenge or me not smoking. Depending on how much you suck it it can take longer to dissolve, when I’m at work and not sucking so much it can take up to 45/50 minutes to dissolve.
I have found that it really does take the edge off the cravings. On previous attempts I have been really irritable and snappy and not a very nice person to live with, but these really do help – I think my boyfriend was dreading me giving up again but he has been pleasantly surprised!
The disadvantage to these is that you shouldn’t eat or drink with one as it can lessen the effect. This I find hard when I’ve gone out for the evening, as the time I want a cigarette most is after a big meal and with drinks. I do try and have one and suck it really quickly but you have to use the willpower a lot more in this situation, but at least the smokers have to go outside for one now!
I haven’t actually stuck to the plan properly, which I hope isn’t going to affect me further down the line. By this I mean I haven’t been having at least 9 a day, I’ve only been having about 5-6, this may be because I smoked less in the first place. But what I plan to do is when I move on to step 2 is cut down to 3-4 a day and so on and also drop to the 2mg.
Summing Up For me these are working really well and I am really pleased with myself and I’m watching the pounds mount up in my piggy bank! I find that they really take the craving away and I think the sucking helps as it’s what you do with a cigarette. You do still have to have some will power and I admit it’s not easy when you are out for the night, but I would recommend them to someone who does want to quit.
