Advantages: interesting story Disadvantages: a bit long
I think it's safe to say that 'Catch me ifyoucan' is not the typical sort of movie I watch. Ifit's not a girly chick flick, comedy or kids film, I'm usually not interested, but after being assured that this film contained no violence or gore, I agreed on watching the DVD!
~The Plot~
It's the mid sixties and Frank Abagnale Jnr is barely sixteen years old when his life is turned upside down. He and his parents have recently been forced to move from their luxury house to a cramped apartment after his father failed to pay his taxes, and as if that wasn't bad enough, he then he walks in on his mother in bed with another man. Frank is devastated, but shortly afterwards, he returns home, and an even bigger bombshell is dropped on him - his parents are getting divorced. A lawyer talks to Frank, and tells him he must choose which of his ...
-optimistic failure. It?s his best performance for yonks and he is the only character with any true depth. Sadly, however, he?s not in the film enough to redeem it.
For me the problem lies with Spielberg. Always great at pace, he loses in on this movie and keeps it going way, way past its sell-by-date. I was ready to turn the film off half way through and the only way it?s stayed in my mind is to remind me that time is precious and two plus hours is too much to waste on dross like this.
Catch it when it?s on TV ifyou must, but sit in a hard chair or you?ll be off to the land of nod after the first twenty minutes. ...
Advantages: Entertaining if you can disengage your brain Disadvantages: Feels rushed and far too implausible
you forget you are watching him act. The same can be said of Hanks in his role as Carl Hanratty and in my opinion a major part of miscasting. Hanks excels at playing the nice guys but struggles at everything else and whilst Hanratty is by no means a bad guy it is a difficult character to play. It doesn't help that the character itself is seriously under worked making him just another character, no real background or motivation. Then maybe that was the whole idea, make his character so lifeless that he just has work, but it fails to really deliver this in the film. Other prominent actors in the film include the likes of Christopher Walker, Martin Sheen and James Brolin but again all their characters are seriously under worked even though they are minor characters. The underlying issue is not so much with quality of the acting but the under ...
