If you have young daughters in the house and are desperate as I was to shut them up then you could do far worse than invest in Sky, or one of the many cable packages that are on offer and get them to watch Nickelodeon.
What is the attraction I don’t know but it never fails to shut the up. Peace descends, of course I can’t get to watch the football but everything has its price and it’s worth it if it shuts them up. The three of them aged 6, 11, and 21 are mesmerized from the moment it is switched on until I dare switch it off.
Nickelodeon is transmitted daily between the hours of 06.00hrs and 22.00hrs. And if you miss a program don’t despair or hunt for the video manual as it is repeated one hour later on the companion channel Nick Replay.
The programs are dominated by two shows, Sabrina the Teenage Witch starring the ever young and beautiful Melissa Joan Hart. This program is repeated so many times that even I know the scripts and that’s without even watching. The girls tell me though that there are now some new episodes. The show has even had a number of spin offs in the shape of films, which also get a showing.
Rugrats is a favourite with the youngest who sits as quite as a mouse watching the exploits of her heroes Tommy, Chucky, Dill Lill and Phil, Angelica and others. This is another program, which has made the leap to the silver screen, and after watching a couple of episodes I have to say that the scripts are rather good.
Also worthy of mention are Kenan and Kel and Sister Sister, which was at one time perhaps the top rated show. Another, Are You Afraid of the Dark would have frightened the life out of me at six years of age but not kids nowadays they lap it up.
There is also a third channel Nick Junior which features such evergreens as Thomas the Tank Engine, The Wombles, Ivor the Engine, Sesame Street and Bob the Builder so between the three channels there is always something for the little and not so little darlings to watch.
Rest assured that you can leave the kids watching these shows safe in the knowledge that there is absolutely nothing here that they should not be watching, but if you are tempted to get a satellite or cable package then please do check first that you get all three channels as some may not be available in the package that you get.
Advantages: great kids' TV from 6am to 7pm, mixture of programmes, mostly British, some great 1970s TV too! Disadvantages: Several Paddingtons or Wombles one after the other can be tiresome!!
