Today i have decided to quit smoking. Although i have only been smoking for a relatively short time (3 months = 10 cigarettes a day) i thought it better to quit while young. At around 8AM i strolled down to my local co op and enquired if they sold nicotine gum or lozenges, typically at first the woman informed me with a swift 'no' then on a second inspection of the shelves behind her she procured a packet of 'nicorette freshmint 2mg gum nicotine'. I endevoured to pay the woman the sum of £5.72 for 30 pieces of the elixer that would hopefully one day make me a smoke free man. After recieving my change i placed the packet securely within my pocket and walked back home to see just what nicorette had to offer a hopefull quitter.

The packet was placed upon the cofee table, there seemed to be an aura of low strengh exuding from the green coloured packet... or perhaps that was because the packet had itself informed me that it was low strengh 2mg nicotine in its small and bold green print; in any case i was feeling stronger for merely looking at it. After reading the use, directions and warnings on the back of the box i warily opened the packet to witness first hand what Pfizer Health AB, Helsingborg, Sweden (the makers of the gum) had produced. Within the packet is 2 sheets of square shaped gum; each sheet containing 15 pieces, suprisingly within the packaging a small booklet can be found that contains useful information on : what is Nicorette Gum, who makes nicorette gum, what is nicorette gum used for, what does nicorette gum do, do not use nicotine gum if..., before you use nicotine gum..., and lastly the teqhnicue for using nicorette gum and safety guidelines if you have used too much nicotine gum.
After carefully reviewing the booklet, i was more than a little wary of inserting the harmless looking square into my mouth, side effects include sore throat, swelling of the gum, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, jaw muscle ache, chest musle ache and redness/ itching of the skin. After carefull theological contemplation i gave the gum a small lick, my head hadnt blown off so i placed the gum between my teeth and began the task of extracting the nicotine within the gum which according to the instructions of the booklet should take me 30 minutes. The method of chewing nicotine gum is simple, chew until the taste is strong and place the gum between cheek and gum then repeat the step once every 5 minutes or so. It is important not to continously chew the gum as you will swallow most of the nicotine which will not get into your bloodstream and may cause, inflamation of the stomach/ hiccups. By placing the nicotine gum between cheek and gum you are ensuring the nicotine is making it's way into your bloodstream through the lining in your mouth.
After finishing the nicotine gum i can honestly say i had no craving for a long white stick that contained tobacco, nicorette gum is unique in that you can taste the freshmint flavour yet at the same time you can taste the nicotine which is in cigarettes. The nicotine can be tasted 30 minutes after chewing the nicotine gum provided you do not eat or drink.
opinion : Nicorette gum is indeed a product that has the potential to help millions of people but it is certainly nothing to the experience of smoking a cigarette(and it doesnt claim to be), which to me and millions of smokers is just plain enjoyable. will power must always be obtained and maintained to conquer habits and addictions... the human body is an amazing piece of equipment which is so amazing and intricately designed that we take it for granted and foolishly pump toxins and poisons within it as though it was the purest of oxygen and the sweetest scent. each time a cigarette is lit we are surrounded by death, i am a god fearing man and so by using nicotine gum i hope to postpone my meeting with my maker... just a little longer.
