Hmm tricky thing nicotine replacement, the only people who want these things are people who want to give up smoking. Why were these then the best selling nicotine replacement over the counter for the year 2001? There cannot be that many smokers who want to give up. Perhaps there are many smokers who want to give up and they never give up giving up. I will give a personal account of my experience with them. This is not a detailed explanation of all their side effects and benefits, for that get the data sheet off the net. Try http://www.nicorette.com for a start.
Do these work? Not a lot is the answer. Perhaps that is why these sell in such great numbers, smokers like to rely on them to get over the nicotine cravings, but they don’t seem to be good at stopping people smoking.
The microtab is a very efficient method of delivering nicotine to the system. You put one under the tongue and let it dissolve slowly. Within one minute the level of nicotine in your blood system is equivalent to that of a cigarette. After a couple of hours you start to be aware of the need for another hit and you can pop another under your tongue. So they satisfy the need for nicotine in the short term but do nothing to lessen the craving. So these are the closest thing to a cigarette substitute there is. This may explain why so many smokers take to them. They provide the hit without lessening it, they stop you smelling, you can take them at work and no one knows and when you get home you can light up without any fear that you are letting yourself down because you don't feel as if you are giving up.
Ah hah you say, so these are being abused. I don't know, they may be but it explains why these outsell every other type of nicotine replacement therapy.
What are they like? Small pills that taste of nothing in particular but leave a slight tingle under your tongue as you dissolve them. Not unpleasant, but not really pleasant either. Until you are used to them they can leave you feeling a little nauseous
Are they effective? As I have already discussed, the answer is yes and no. They satisfy your craving but are less helpful in giving up than other forms of nicotine replacement.
Are there any restrictions in their use? Yes you are advised not to use them more often than 4 hourly; you are advised not to use them if you are under 18 or if you have any form of medical condition. Great so anyone who really needs to use them for health reasons cannot. I think you will find that most health professionals will work around these restrictions and be a little freer in the attempt to be sensible and not over protective.
What do they cost? About £15 for 105, the same as three and a half packets of cigarettes and 105 will last you six or seven days. So they are half price then. As a substitute this is cheap as a cigarette spacer this too is cheap (unless you are a smoker of illegally imported rolling tobacco).
Are there any side effects? For me there are two; the first I can directly attribute to the microtabs, namely sore areas under my tongue. Not too bad just a little tender when I pop the next one under my tongue for a few seconds. I suppose it could get worse or even lead to a cancerous spot but for the moment I will tolerate it. The second is a little constipation. I am not sure if this is an effect of not smoking. I used to rely on my first fag getting me going in the morning, as it were, and I do miss that. I will get over it but till then fruit and fibre and fluid are my dietary stable mates.
Are they handy? This is one of the brilliant aspects of these tabs. A handy plastic pack that you have to fill and refill, it is just like making sure that when I leave the house I have my cigs and lighter with me. So that part of my sad habit is satisfied, I have the toys.
Am I still smoking? Yes from time to time. This is what I mean about them, after 3 months use I am still smoking 10 or 15 a weekend and none during the week. That is an improvement but I am not sure it is healthy to be using these great little tablets as a smoking spacer. I want to stop. I find it hard and these tablets are not really helping me get used to life without nicotine. Yes I can live a life without cigarettes but I need my nicotine hit and these are not teaching me to do without that.
I am not going to tell you how to stop smoking, largely because I don't know. I do know that for me the nicorette microtab will not help me quit. They help me smoke less but that is not what they are for. They may be all you need however so I will advise you to give them a try. If they work, great, If not then try again. The moral of this tale is to never give up giving up, I guess it will happen to me one day.
Advantages: May save your life. Oh, and they have worked for me Disadvantages: Have tasted better!
So, here I am. Feeling more than a bit pleased with myself! After 10 years of being a 20 a day smoker, I appear to have cracked it and kicked the evil weed- it has been a whole 26 days. I have saved a whole £100 (and then promptly blew it on shoes, but that's another story).
This is far from the first attempt. In fact if I’m honest, I have lost track of how many times I have tried. From patches (nasty rash), to Gum (nasty taste), to will power (nasty ... ...I enlisted the help of my GP. Once he had recovered from the shock of me finally admitting to more than 5 fags a day he sent me to see the “Smoking Cessation Counsellor”, who was one of the practise Nurses. We met and assessed my horrid habit, decided on what form my fix would take and set a date. And there I was with a prescription for two weeks supply of Micro-tabs. I paid my £6.30 NHS prescription charge and off I went.
I went home and examined ...

Advantages: takes the edge off a craving Disadvantages: Doesnt take away the craving, tastes horrible, cost a lot and dont work
For anyone who is a smoker, life is hard. The finances are drained, the lungs are black and that mucus you end up spitting down the sink each morning is enough to make you feel nausious. Well sadly these things wont help you.
THE LOOK:
The pills come in a handy little container that operates on a wheel system, allowing you to turn it onto your next pill before pressing the little button to puch it out. Although a good little novelty I found it ... ...keeps the pills safe.
I guess I should stop calling them pills though, after all they are little white tablets you put under your tongue, tiny indeed but thats what they need to be. I looked at them and wondered if there was anything in them, there is!
THE TASTE:
One problem with these tablets is the disgusting taste. I couldn't stomach it easily and had to sit down for a few minutes after trying them. It feels like a burning senssation under ...

Advantages: Small unobtrusive. Disadvantages: Made my mouth sore, expensive.
I tried Nicorette Microtab because a friend recommended it. It did not help me much. I craved cigarettes almost all the time I used the tablets. My tongue became very sore and my mouth was so dry that my dentures were really uncomfortable. My breath was foul and I had a metallic taste in my mouth when I used a tablet. It lasted until I cleaned my teeth.
I was not very impressed by this product at all, but others may find it useful. After all, a friend ... ...might be beneficial for fairly light smokers who do not wear dentures.
Like all of the products designed to help you stop smoking, success depends very much on the person, their lifestyle and their general make up. What suits one won't suit another, that's why there are so many different products of this type on the market. If you haven't tried these these its worth a go! ...

Advantages: you decide when you need to take it Disadvantages: Taste terrible
I cannot lie to you, these taste awful, but if you can forgive that taste, then I think they're worth sticking with Unlike the patches, you can decide when you should take one, it does recommend you take something like 2 an hour if you're on twenty a day, but I competely ignored this and only took a tablet when I felt a really stronge craving, I found doing it this way meant I would only take about 7 or so a day, this resulted in me staving off the ... ...reduce the amount of tablets at my own pace. If you have an off day you can always take more too! I stopped taking these completely after two weeks(earlier than they recommend on the packet) and I've not had a cigarette since.
so really for me it was the total control over the dose that I found so appealing, and they are very discreet, no dodgy looking plaster stuck to you giving you a rash, no stupid looking plastic cigar thing that your supposed ...

...power. I found that Nicorette Microtab gave me that extra support I needed - I took them for about 4 weeks after giving up. I haven't has a cigarette now in 12 months. The tabs were better for me than patches as they give an almost instant effect, whereas the patches was more of a constant background effect that didn't really mimic the way a smoker gets nicotine into the body. ...
