Advantages: Historically accurate Disadvantages: Sometimes details are too political
...This is an excellent book. It is well written and every detail is well researched.
Sometimes NigelTranter tended to put in too much political detail, which would maybe detract from the flow of the story. But in all, it is a very good history lesson. A complete antidote to Shakespeare's version, which was so wrong historically.
You can always trust NigelTranter to present a well-researched and accurate view of Scottish history. He lived and breathed his work.
Alas, there will be no more NigelTranter novels now that he has passed away.
His work will be remembered for a long time, though, as most libraries stock his work.
It will prove useful for anyone wishing to learn more about Scottish history in a less formal way....

The White Company are a band of English mercenaries and the novel details how their new commander, Sir Nigel Loring, and some new recruits travel from England to join the company in France and the adventures when they arrive. The interaction between the characters of different social standing at a time of chivalry is both interesting and enjoyable.
