I'm by no means an expert, but I love photography, and taking photos of everything, so I was thrilled to bits when two January's ago, I got this digital colour and black and white camera as a late Christmas present! It was late because it came from Japan, so I can't tell you what the price was, but I can at least say it's considerably cheaper bought from Japan! I have found a range of prices on this camera, with a range of about £100, so if you’re going to buy this, do some searching for good prices.
This is a very good diddy little camera. It's a good size- 11.4 cm by 3.2cm by 6cm and fits snug into my hands. It also comes with a good carry case that you can attach or clip to a belt or a strap, and inside it, there are little Velcro pouches-perfect for storing extra memory cards. However, I prefer to keep my camera in the case in my bag! (Never one for keeping gadgets outside my trousers)
This camera sports 2.0 mega pixels and is a very easy to use camera, so it’s suitable for any levels of photography. It has a good zoom too; up to 4x, and the pictures still stay remarkably clear and un-blurred (unless of course you take a picture about 5mm away from something and blur the camera!)
Modes: What I love about this camera, and what makes me want to recommend it to you all, is the shooting features it has. These are: Movie Mode (a silent 15 second film), Portrait, Landscape, Fireworks show, Party/indoor, Sunset, Close up, Night portrait, Night landscape, Copy (in black and white) Beach/snow, Museum, Backlight. I won’t bore you all with intense details about every single setting, but I shall do a summery!
Movie mode: when in this mode, the picture quality is a bit less, and is rather more less in dark surroundings. It is unfortunate that the films are silent, and are considerably short, but it does come as an extra to a picture-taking camera, so you wouldn’t really expect amazing films! It has 15 frames per second. Fireworks show: This works really well, only the problem is that when you take a photo of something, you need it to be still, so it’s not blurred, yes? Thing is, fireworks move! So you get a good colour contrast with fireworks, and the colours come out clear, it’s just the ends are blurred! Needs a bit of practise to get good pictures of fireworks.
Copy: This has less quality, but actually looks quite nice in black and white, and would make a nice card or something-I have a nice black and white picture of my cat that looks good, and you would be able to get great effects with good colour and tone contrasts.
Close up: This is fantastically detailed and clear! The only downside is you either need an arm as steady as a tripod, or a tripod to keep the lens from refocusing automatically, as it is incredibly sensitive to the slightest movement. However the pictures you can get close up are amazing, and are great for photographing tiny things; they get great detail. I once took a picture of my eye and the tiniest detail was quite spooky.
The rest of the modes also work really well with the camera, but I recommend practise with the different modes, to be able to know what mode would suit what setting and background, because you can get very different results with different settings. There is also a manual mode, if you can’t be bothered with technical settings!
Swivel Lens: The main feature of the camera is its inter-swivel lens. To take pictures you swivel it forward and I love that you don’t need a view finder-the little screen (a little too little for my liking) shows you what the lens sees! What really does it for me is that the lens swivels backwards on itself too, so you can take pictures of yourself!! Hehe great fun!! Though I would point out to be very careful when you swivel the lens round to take pictures-if you do it too fast (like I once did) you risk breakage!
For all you camera whizzes out there, the minimum shutter speed is 2 seconds, and the maximum is 1/3000 second. There is an LCD display (TFT active matrix) and the display format is 110,000 pixels. The memory card is the Compact Flash Card - type I. And just in case you wanted to know- the minimum operating temperature of the camera is 0°C, and the maximum is 40°C (I wonder how someone worked that out). You can also change the sizes of the pictures you take, which is good for emailing photos, and using them for other PC purposes.
Flash: The flash on this little camera is pretty good as well. There’s a built in flash, and extra features for the flash are listed as: fill in mode, slow sync, flash off, red-eye reduction and auto mode. Its reach is from 0.4m to 3m so I think that’s pretty average as far as cameras go.
Features: The camera boasts a range of extra features, and here they are. <<<Delay timer: This is really good, the delay is of 10 seconds-plenty of time to get your face in the picture! <<<Auto power save: This obviously saves battery, and doesn’t waste any, but it really annoys me when I’ve taken a photo, and I’m about to take another one, and the thing turns off! It’s ok most of the time, but sometimes I’ve missed good photo opportunities to save energy! <<<Date/time stamp <<<Display brightness control –these two are always handy! <<< Cable: included with the camera is one USB cable. However I just use one of those little plug in things for the digi-memory card that you just plug into an outlet on the pc. But everyone’s different for what they have. To use the USB cable is again as easy as pie, just plug it into the ickle socket on the camera, plug into the back of you pc, then turn the camera on. A screen will pop up, and you can then just select which pictures you wish to save on your computer! <<<Hand strap: This attaches to a little loop on the side of the camera that rotates a whole 360 degrees so your strap and it good for keeping round your neck, or wrapping round your wrist to minimise the risk of losing it. <<<Battery: This is flat and slim so it fits in nicely with the camera, and isn’t large and cumbersome. Charging couldn’t be easier; simply open the side of the camera, slide it out (has a little lip where you can just take the battery out) and slot into the charger that just needs to be plugged into any regular socket, and wait for the orange light to stop flashing! <<<Use with tripod: This is possible, because there is a little screw in area underneath the camera, for the more professional shots.
The camera also comes with a 1-year warranty. Here are my ratings of the components of the camera:
Appearance: This is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye-I like the silver and blue colour theme-nice n’ swanky!! It is eye catching, but not too showy. Rating: 9/10
Ease of button use: Yes, they’re easy to use with 2 zoom buttons, a preview button, 4 arrows on a little circle, and three menu buttons. The shutter is subtly placed on top, but it’s easy to find. There is a slide bar for Off, On, and Look at photos, which really makes it simple to use. Rating: 9/10
Easy to use with instructions: A big yes, for a person who usually likes to dive straight in with a new toy, the instructions are easy to read and understand (And I was impressed with an all English manual from Japan!). The manual is over 100 pages long, but it isn’t complicated, or boring, or hard to follow. That gets a big thumbs-up! There is also an instructional CD-ROM. Rating: 10/10
Viewing screen: I found this a little bit small and it’s tricky to make out the pictures taken because of the tiny detail. However the screen is the perfect size for the menu and settings, so it’s a bit of give and take with that. Rating: 8/10
Quality of pictures: Absolutely excellent, though I recommend some practise with the modes to reduce red eye! Rating: 9/10
Quality, make and durability: Nikon is a fantastic camera rate, so you don’t need to worry about the company the camera comes from. It’s a tough little camera too! I’ve had it for 1 ½ years and there isn’t a single scratch, nick, dent or scrape on it! The only not so perfect bit is the hand strap is a bit grubby, but then I guess you could take it off and wash it! Not that I've tried! Rating: 9/10
Overall Rating: I am very happy with my camera, and I find it so easy to take any number of pictures (the memory card with the camera stores only 8 pictures so I recommend buying a bigger memory card) and transfer them to my computer. Rating: 9/10
And finally here are some pictures I’ve taken of my camera, just to show you how versatile it is! (There’s my guy, storpey, in the picture )
Advantages: Optical Zoom, Digital Zoom, LCD Display, Easy Menu, Video Mode, Great Scene Modes Disadvantages: Only 3mpx, Standard 8MB Compact Flash Card
This little camera is a great piece of kit. The camera has many super features that make the camera both easy to use but able to produce high quality pictures.
The features on the camera are as follows:-
5.6 - 16.8mm zoom
3 mega Pixels
Flash
Resolution Output up to 1600x1280
Scene Modes - Portrait, Landscape, Fireworks, Party / Indoor, Sunset, Closeup, Night Portrait, Night Landscape, Copy (great for copying text from books Black and White), ... ...Cameras tools and modes make it a very versatile and effective camera which I would recommend to anyone. It is compact enough to fit easily into a pocket and will allow you to take it anywhere.
The camera although it has a different look is still very durable and easily withstands the constant where and tear taken when being used outside. The retractable lens cap also means there are little chance of scratches the lens or breakig the lens glass.

Advantages: Great design Disadvantages: Alot of money
The Nikon Coolpix 2500 practically screams "party!" color and unusual shape are certain to attract attention, but under the metal skin is a capable camera with surprising flexibility.
Like many other Coolpix models, the 2500 has a swiveling lens mechanism. But the 2500 is unique in that its swivel lens hides neatly inside the camera's frame when not in use. This therfore means that it is ceverly protected from bumps, dust and the horror of dirty ... ...The battery and CF card share a small, easy-to-open compartment.
At $300, the sleek and slim 2500 is competitive with several full-size digital cameras. But its small size, excellent build quality, and Nikon cachet will certainly click with many consumers looking for a stylish and distinctly fun camera. ...

I bought this camera from DIXONS in OCT 02, in the sale for £159.99. Considering the best price on the .net is still £149.99 now, I think this is proof that this camera is a quality all rounder. The camera has a max resolution of 2.1 megapixels, I have upgraded the CF card to a 64MB version that cost me an extra £20.00 and I can store 68 MAX RESOLUTION images on board. Picture quality is top notch and to be honest I have not even thought of upgrading ... ...my uses (mainly family photos up to 5inch by 7inch) the images taken are crystal clear.
The menus and control on this camera are all easy to use, intuitive and the unit feels solid and expensive. One gripe is that it is quite difficult to turn off all the automatic exposure options and settings so it can be fiddly to set up for the exact picture you want to take. However the fact that the lens can swivel to face you for self portraits easily makes ...

Advantages: Small, lightweight, durable Disadvantages: doesn't perform that well in artificial light, battery doesn't last long
...system is compatible with the Nikon software. I looked before I leapt (silly I know) and ended up having to upgrade my system so I could install the software. The view screen smudges quite easily. If you're trying to swivel the lens out in a hurry because of a great photo opportunity it's often hard to avoid touching the screen and getting finger marks all over it.
The battery life is not that great, many is the time I have run out of juice soon ... ...is the main culprit here. I have found that I usually need to re-charge the battery every time I use the camera.
The camera seems to take quite a long time to warm up ready for a shot. Often if I am taking a photo of people they will have given up posing before the camera is even ready to start shooting. So you can forget about capturing the heat of a moment unless you've left your camera on for a while, which because of the battery... One more ...

...making enquiries, Dixons advised that Nikon were quoting £125 to repair the camera as the lens had been turned in the wrong direction. It had not. Even if it had, then one would expect there to be a mechanism whereby the lens is prevented from being turned in the wrong direction - thereby damaging the camera beyond economic repair.
The saga goes on but, in my view, the camera is defective in design (it should be more durable) and Nikon are not a ...

Advantages: Pocket-sized, Easy to pickup and use Disadvantages: No optical viewfinder, no sound recording.
...The Coolpix 3500 has the same body as the 2500, which is a good and bad thing. In creating these cameras, Nikon took the famous rotating lens of the Coolpix 900 series and put it "inside" the body of the 3500. You get the flexibility of the Coolpix 900 series' rotating lens in a smaller camera, though it's a lot clumsier to operate.
One thing that really bothers me about the design is that rotating the lens is harder than it should be. Rather than using a knob on the side of the camera, you just mash your hands in there and turn it. It's clumsy for sure, but what usually happens is that you get fingerprints all over the lens. I hope the next iteration of this camera will implement this a bit better.
So why would you want a rotating lens? My favorite reason is one that's happened to me in real life many times. Suppose you...
