Ive been debating about buying a digital camera for many years. Im no expert with cameras and didn't really know what to look for in the camera specifications. Until I read a review about this Nikon. Every review i read seemed to praise the camera for its ease of use with beginners. I finally purchased the camera for around £130.
Ive had the camera now for about 2 days and all i can say is WOW!!!. The picture quality is amazing. The camera is very small fitting into the palm of your hand, making it very easy to carry around. The camera comes with a 16mb memory card which can hold various amounts of photos depending on the picture quality you have selected. Its around 19 pictures on the highest quality and 22+ on the default quality, but i have already purchased a 256mb flashcard so that i dont have any worries of running out of photos. I would recommend you do the same. You can pick up a 256mb card for around £30 from any decent computer store.
Camera Options: The camera has many photo taking options depending on the situation you are. There are way to many functions to explain in a review but a few options range from Sport pictures where blurring is removed, Video - where you can video record an event without sound. Aswell as the standard photo taking mode.
Camera Flash - With the flash mode set on automatic the camera will decide which type of flash it should use to illuminate the surroundings. A problem i have noticed with really dark environments is that you have to hold the camera VERY steady so not to blur the photo. This isn't a major problem but can be annoying when you take a photo and realise its blurred.
Computer Transferring - This is very simple indeed. The camera comes with a USB connection lead to your camera. Plug the camera in and then turn it on and the computer will recognise the camera immediately. (Software and drivers must be installed before hand). Once you load up the Nikon software you simply transfer the entire contents from the camera to your hardd rive and thats it. SIMPLE.
View Finder Monitor - This has to be the best part of the camera it makes taking pictures simple. You get a image of what the camera can see in the monitor on the back of the camera and you just simply have to line up the image, zoom in or out and the snap away. The camera has 2 types of zoom. First of all you zoom in or out of the object to get it nicely within the photo and take the picture. Then when you look at the photos on the flash card you can further zoom in to the photo and perform many functions on the picture like cropping where you cut the picture to the size you want to get rid of any unecessary background.
This camera is a brilliant little piece of technology. Any beginner photographer looking for a camera that is small, top quality and very easy to use then this is for you.

Advantages: Small (Pocket sized) but not fiddly, Good instructions and easy to use and excellent pictures. Disadvantages: Batteries don't last very long but this is always the case with cheap Digital Camera's

Review of Nikon Coolpix 3100
Advantages: This camera is easy to use. If you are hopeless at framing a picture its photo wizards help. They give an outline of a figure for you to line up with your subject. There is a variety of these template available. I found them a great help ! Disadvantages: Occasionaly pictures taken in the dark look ok on the cameras screen but when placed onto the computer may seem blurred.
