I bought my Nikon Coolpix 775 in January of 2003 just after my daughter was born, so I could take plenty of pictures of her as she grows up. Back in those days the camera had a high street price of nearly £300 but by the power of the internet I got it for just under £200. I believe you can now get the same model for even less, around £170 making this one of the cheaper models, especially when you take into account that Nikon is a fairly respected camera manufacturer.
The camera comes with everything you need to go and comprehensive instructions.
Memory card – It’s an 8MB card which is just about sufficient to start with, you can get 8 pictures in high res mode, 16 in medium and 32 in low res mode. That’s according to the manual but I find in medium res mode I get 20 photos on one card. Medium res mode looks fine to me for everyday use, low res is slightly too poor if you want to print the pictures out.
Battery – The rechargeable battery which comes with the camera is good for around 2 hours of usage, depending on how often you use the LCD screen on the camera – this is quite heavy in terms of power consumption. I find generally that the battery lasts long enough for me to fill the 8MB card with pictures and has a bit left over. You will probably want to get a bigger memory card and more powerful battery and for around £50 you can achieve this by shopping around.
Battery charger – not much I can say, it takes about an hour to recharge the battery.
Strap and case – The camera comes with a strap which is handy to put around your wrist so you don’t drop it and a leather style case to protect it if you drop it.
Leads – You get leads to watch your photos on a TV and also a USB connection so you can transfer photos onto your PC. The good thing about a USB connection is that it is dead easy to set up being “plug and play” technology. You just plug the camera in and the PC knows it is there and what it is (more or less)!
Software – You get CD ROMS with software to transfer the photos onto a PC, to edit them and file them on your hard-drive. You can also send them as emails to your friends and even set them up as desktop wallpaper.
Manual – It’s always good when you get instructions on how to use something. With the Coolpix 775 you get a 170 in depth manual telling you everything about the camera and also a small poster style information sheet telling you the basics so you can be taking photos straight away. So far I have only read small sections of the main manual as I only use the camera for pretty amateurish stuff, baby photos and the like.
First impressions of the camera are very good, it looks nice and has plenty of features, easy to use and small enough to put into your pocket being lightweight as well. It’s quite easy to learn how to use the camera and I was taking pictures like a Japanese tourist within minutes of opening the box (and charging the battery)!
I bought this camera partly to offset the costs of developing photos but I don’t think I have saved any money as I simply take many more pictures than I ever used to. Certainly I have saved money over what it would have cost me but as I have taken several hundred pictures in the past 8 months or so, I have spent a lot on photo quality paper and ink cartridges for the printer. A good tip here is to shop around for consumables on the net as it is much more pricey to buy these things on the High Street, as you probably know.
A good example is ink cartridges, it costs about £25 for an official colour cartridge but I buy mine online (grey imports but just as good) and it only costs me about £10 for a colour one and black one together. But I digress, back to the camera!
It has all the features you could realistically want and if you disagree then you obviously need to spend a lot more money for the quality of camera you need.
You simply point and click and hey presto the picture is taken, you can look on the LCD screen to see if it’s OK and if not just delete and try again. There are many different presets you can select before taking the picture, for example there is a portrait mode for taking pictures of people (and babies) but you can make up your own settings if you are a bit of a pro. The “auto” mode is fine for just about all the pictures I take, it even knows when to use the built in flash but it does sometimes over-expose I find, but generally about 90% of pictures I take are fine first time, it really is a good camera for beginners.
There is a built in zoom option as well but this is only 3 times zoom and the quality isn’t very good, I’d advise against this option. This is the only real drawback of the camera, it isn’t very good at distance. I have taken pictures of things in the distance such as aircraft and the quality hasn’t been there. I suspect this is due to the camera “only” being able to display 2 megapixels, but compared to other 2 megapixels cameras it is quite favourable, I think this must be down to the lens being good quality but I can’t say for sure as I am not an expert.
Some of the options on the menu are slow to perform, for example when you are deleting photos it can take a few seconds more than you would like but that is me being impatient I expect. Other than that and the quality and long range this is a superb camera especially for the money.
I’d highly recommend this camera to anyone other than a professional photographer as it is superb at taking pictures of people and close ups. It is OK for longer range shots such as landscapes too but if you are wanting to take long range photos of particular subject matter such as aircraft etc I’d look around at paying slightly more maybe for one with 4 megapixels or above.
You can see two examples of pictures I have taken with this camera if you go to-
Advantages: Compact, light, good picture quality Disadvantages: Easy to switch on by mistake, have to carry separate charger
The Nikon Coolpix 775 is my third digital camera to date, and the best of the bunch. Previously I had a Largan Chameleon (very basic VGA capability), and a Minolta Dimage 2300 (reasonable picture quality, but heavy and no optical zoom). I upgraded to the Nikon when I needed something compact, with good picture quality, and an optical zoom. The Nikon hasn't let me down in any respect. It has a 2mp CCD, which is slightly less pixels for your money ... ...not paying extra for the Nikon bag, choose your camera pouch carefully. A neck strap would also have been more useful than the wrist strap.
Overall, a great purchase, and a very versatile camera for the money. It's widely available from photography specialists, electrical retailers, and online, with prices ranging from £270 to £315. Update December 2003: You will still find this camera available new in a few stores, but the price has fallen to around ...

Advantages: Still a great camera at great value! Disadvantages: Getting on now, newer models available.
...present he really wanted. The Nikon Coolpix 775 is getting on a bit now, being over a year since it was first 'released'. So while it cost about £300 back then, dad was able to pick this up at 'almost' new from a well-respected local photography/lens shop for £120.
That might seem to be a lot of money to spend on what was effectively a second hand camera, but it was completely unblemished and came in the original packaging. The only thing that was ... ...presto. The battery is a Nikon EN-EL1 Lithium Ion Battery Pack 7.4v 680mAh.
-- Straps, case and leads --
The camera comes with a wrist strap, and a leather case. A USB lead is provided for connecting the camera to your PC, while another type (sorry dont know the name) for connecting it directly to your television - great for when the non-technical (grand)parents are round.
-- Memory card --
The camera usually comes with a 8mb card, which really ...

This is an excellent digital camera that i would really recomended if you are looking to get into digital photography. The great thing about a digital camera is after your intial outlay your overall cost of processing is drastically cut. No more wasted photos as you just delete the one you dislike. You can take your memory card to the developers oryou can print your own or just save them to your pc or cd. The coolpix 775 is abot a £170 now and comes ... ...Long life rechargable last approximatley 2 hours using LCD screen. It's worth buying a second battery for your hols as it saves taking the charger and leaving you short. You can Buy disposeable batterys but they are £7 a throw and rechargable is a bout £20 or less.
Charger - so you can recharge you battery.
Strap - So you can tie it to your arm. Also handy to use to pull out of case

...on the cute, compact, idiot-proof, Nikon 775. What a dream come true - it was relatively inexpensive for a digital, gave the same quality as a standard camera, and it reassuringly simple to use. However, if you are more technologically recondite than me, there are a number of modes, including landscape, dim lighting (good for the clubbing nights, and one especially for glittering beaches and snowscapes. Perfect. It runs on a rechargable battery, ... ...one, as they do take a while to charge up fully. It is also EXTREMELY robust, as I found out when I dropped it from the back of an elephant and although it bounced rather alarmingly, was completely unaffected. Any camera that can do that gets 10/10 in my book. It is also compact without the buttons being about the size of pinheads, and very lightweight. I'll never go back to accidentally exposing a film and ruining all the pictures, or finding out ...

Advantages: sleek, great photos, light & simple to use Disadvantages: internal memory is too small
...I was laid down a challenge by my wife for her birthday present. She wanted a digital camera on the basis our existing one (NikonCoolpix775) is nearly five years old and ancient by today's standards.
She had no idea what but I was given a number of guidelines like "It needs to be light/fit in my hand bag/easy to use" - well there's loads of choice then and I can hardly go wrong with those rules can I?
My research has opened my eyes in that our Nikon is now something out of the dark ages. We must have taken 1000's on photos with it and have always been delighted with its performance and totally oblivious as to how technology has moved on.
With the rules laid down it is a veritable minefield of options and the hardest thing is to decide where to start. Luckily a flyer came through our door from Jessops which gave me a start...

Advantages: Semi-professional camera, feels and acts like an SLR, uses F mount Nikon lenses Disadvantages: Auto mode does not give as good results as coolpix cameras. Traditional poor documentation
...I bought this baby to act as photographer for my daughter's wedding. I previously used Olympus and Canon SLRs for photojournalism, and more recently have used Kodak and Nikon consumer digital cameras. See my report on the Coolpix775.
As a photographer who used to be used to SLR cameras and hours spent in the darkroom, I always longed for a Nikon. Now the D-100 has arrived at the affordable end of the digital masters professional cameras.
The camera is so fully featured, I have not yet learned to use half of them yet, after 3 months of continuous use. See the manufacturer's review for details. The downside has been the manual, which does not cover the features in a readable manner. On the other hand, the user base is huge and there are many online sources of help from user groups.
The lenses to go with the camera body can be...

...97 percent at telephoto. Given that I like LCD monitors to be as close to 100 percent accuracy as possible, the 3100 performed fairly well here.
6- The Coolpix 3100's battery life is about 83 minutes in its worst-case power drain mode.
7- If you turn off the LCD this life can get as long as 4 days!!!! Amazing.
8- Last but not least a final question: What do you get in the box where the Coolpix lies waiting for you to use. Well, A wrist strap; a 16 MB lexar CompactFlash card; video cable; USB cable; two non-rechargeable AA batteries; a CD-ROM with the drivers and Nikon View software and the usual instruction manual.
Verdict.
From the sharp Nikon optics to the full range of exposure control, this Coolpix may satisfy a wide range of users.
As in the earlier 885 and 775 models, Nikon continues to extend the Coolpix line...
