...to upgrade from my old Nikon Coolpix 995 camera, and plumped for what I saw as the top of Nikon's non-SLR range.
This little beauty has an 8MP resolution, coupled with a 10x Optical zoom. The other main draw, for me, was the fact that the camera has Vibration Reduction, which can actually reduce the effects of those inevitable shakes present in images taken with slow shutter speeds.
I also noticed that using the 10x optical zoom, and then zooming ... ...to be taken with Vibration Reduction enabled. Digital Zoom was something that I never used on my old camera, as the results were appalling.
Other superb features include the quick photo settings, enabling one step set up of portraits and panoramas etc. The portrait mode sets of a series of low-level flashes, meaning that when the real flash fires, only the most die-hard blinkers are caught with their eyes half closed!

I purchased a Nikon Coolpix 8800 a few months ago as a spare back up camera to my Nikon D70. I have owned a few digital compacts & found that the 8800 is a far more versitile compact towards my earlier compacts.
This camera works brilliant with a Nikon WC-E80 Wide angle lens, this makes the Panaramic feature more usable allowing the shooter to take bigger Panaramic pictures with less shots.
I found the camera quite complicated at first, but once ... ...use this camera or a Nikon power pack wich holds 6AA batteries, I have found that the standard batteries are substandard & drain quite quickly when
using some of the features (auto focus, rear view panal, uploading images). I also find the Computer lead attachment socket awkward.
On a good note I have found the Nikon Coolpix 8800 a very versitile compact giving out brilliant image quality & definition, I would recomend that this camera is more ...
