We had heard that one of the drawbacks of digital cameras is that they eat batteries. We made sure that the Coolpix 700 used ordinary batteries rather than specialist camera batteries. Camera batteries are much more expensive and harder to get hold of on a day out when your batteries run out. This uses simple AA batteries that can be purchased anywhere. We actually use rechargeable ones in ours most of the time and they are fine.
The zoom is good - up to 2.5 times. It zooms quickly and noiselessly, which is a bonus if you are trying to capture wildlife.
The screen at the back of the camera is excellent for viewing the photos and setting them up. You can work with this off, to save battery life, but we always leave it on.
We transfer our photos onto our computer quickly and easily using a Swift Cardport which we purchased separately. This was £50, but well worth the money. It is like using a floppy disc drive and makes transferring photos very simple and, importantly with a digital camera, quick.
The camera comes with good software for your PC and a cable for viewing on a television set. This is simple to do, just plug in and go through the photos. We tend to go back to MGI Photosuite usually. It is so simple to use and has all the basic facilities. I really don't like more complicated photo editing software as I don't know any packages well enough to get the best out of them.
We have a CD writer, so put our photos on CD. If we didn't have that our harddrive would be pretty full by now. We only print out really excellent or memorable photos now. We prefer to view them onscreen most of the time, using MGI Photosuite's 'Gallery' feature. Photo quality paper is expensive. Fortunately, we live in a market town that has a regular market trader who sells computer bits cheaply - and we can pick up photo paper much cheaper than in the shops. It is worth shopping around as the likes of PC World and Dixons' prices can be beaten very easily.
One drawback we have found is that the camera turns itself off to save battery life. This is only a problem if you are like me and take ages to set a photo up.
The only other drawback is that children tend to be fascinated by digital cameras and want to have a go. This results in a finger-marked screen, occasional fights and sometimes a dropped camera. Ours was dropped on concrete once and survived, so this is made of strong stuff.
We took out the extra insurance with it. We don't normally bother with insurance, but with an item like this, which is easily dropped, we thought it would be worthwhile. We are glad we did, although we haven't had occasion to use it yet.
All in all, we are delighted with our Coolpix 700 and have recommended it to friends.

...a lot of rubbish. The Nikon Coolpix 700, however, has the quality of a camera twice its price. Although it doesn't have a zoom lens, the 2.1 megapixel images are so sharp you can crop your images with a good photo editor and the pictures remain beautifully clear. Its easy to use, and if you can get the camera shop to throw in a free cardport, image downloading is very quick (otherwise a bit slow through the serial port). The LCD display is smooth ...

...out and buy yourself the Nikon Coolpix P5000. It may be expensive at £239, but what you get for your chas is a digital camera packed with as many features as you could possibly dream up. It doesn't look like the nicest camera out there and it certainly isn't one you can slide into your top pocket but what do you expect from what I think is a semi-pro piece of digital hardware.
Picture resolution is 10 million pixels and this captures every moment ... ...a digital camera before. To add to the picture taking experience the P5000 has an incorporated vibration reduction system within the lense which means taking snaps after a night on the ale won't leave you with blurry pictures! The flash is also very powerful and when used with the fading light setting picks up soft settings beautifully. A greater feature when taking snaps of landscapes in fading light or outside with minimal background light.

...replacement. We eventually chose the NIKON COOLPIX 700 and have been delighted with the results. The images are sharp, colours true and no pixelating when zooming in on the images. I was using my SLR for important pictures due to the quality of the old camera but have stopped using it since the Nikon.
We bought the camera from a local computer retailer, it came bundled with re-chargable batteries, a charger and a flash card. The card holds 8 photos ...

What happens when you get stylish elegance with high resolution performance and that too from one of the leading manufactures of the best in cameras around the world?
Some of the key features:
~ 12.1 Megapixels, I got good prints out of it with better resolution!
~ 3x Optical Zoom that can also be extended!! with exceptional pictures and clarity.
~ With the Optical VR Image Stabilization I got a minimum effect of camera shake, that was just exceptional!
... ...I could also see the pictures that I clicked through a album view!
~ I could upload the pictures on my laptop and got a good resolution pictures that I emailed all my friends!

...be able to use the Nikon Coolpix 700 to take pictures with at work. We had to use these photos to help show on-site progress and problems. The quality of the images were excellent, especially when used in conjunction with a decent paint program (such as Paint Shop Pro) to enhance and "errors" when the photo was taken (such as dark lighting, or overexposure).
The flash card system meant that many pictures could be taken and stored before the need ... ...limitation on the number of photos taken were not an issue (often numerous photos of the same subject can be taken to ensure some of them show what is needed) if you have a few large flashcards.
With the new Coolpix 990 out, i would suggest that first to any newcomer to the scene, but the Coolpix 700 is a good camera in its own right (and price range) ...

The Nikon Coolpix P5000 features advanced functions, which are skillfully packed into a solid body that features a magnesium alloy front panel, for durability in a lightweight package. The new Mode dial gives access to four exposure modes that advanced photographers desire for even greater control over camera operations. Programmed Auto (P) mode automatically selects shutter and aperture settings for optimal exposure. Shutter-priority Auto (S) lets the photographer automatically select a desired shutter speed, and the camera sets the optimal aperture setting. Aperture-priority Auto (A) offers 10-step control over the aperture setting in 1/3 EV increments to let the photographer control depth of field, while the camera automatically adjusts the shutter speed to achieve optimal exposure. Manual (M) exposure mode gives the photographer full control over both aperture and shutter speed settings. In addition, a selection of 16 Scene modes and seven different movie modes can be easily accessed via the Mode dial and high-resolution 2.5 inch LCD. Originally developed for Nikon SLR lenses, the Optical Image Stabilization system helps you overcome camera shake. The system automatically detects and compensates for small movements that would otherwise cause images to blur, and enables a shooting experience similar to shooting at shutter speeds three stops faster, while also providing a smoother image on the LCD.
