Ni kon P5100 (P standing for Performance ) is one of the latest in Nikon's Coolpix range. It is a 12.1 MP flagship digicam with SLR type features built in a beautifully designed compact frame. It is available at around 200 GBP though when I bought it, it was somewhere above 260 GBP with a few free accessories in the scheme. ---------------------------------------------- ~~~~~ === DESIGN === ~~~~~~ ---------------------------------------------- The body of P5100 is made from magnesium alloy. It comes in Black colour which probably is a tactic from the designers because on pictures it looks bigger than it is in reality . Infact it is a very compact camera , smaller than many superior zoom cameras and it offers alot of features which I dont think i would utilize in my lifespan !!!!
It has a 1/1.72-inch CCD sensor which happens to be larger than the typical compact cameras. It has a 2.5-inch LCD screen. There is an optical viewfinder also but it wont give you 100% coverage. I believe 75-80% coverage is good enough. It has a 3.5X Zoom facility which is pretty average by standards. The lens is compatible with various converter lenses to improve wide angles .
You can play with the settings using a control wheel , I am still getting adjusted to it. A function button will allow you to access your favorite settings.
Also the grip of the camera is pretty good for average sized hands .
---------------------------------------------- ~~~~~ === PERFORMANCE === ~~~~~~ ---------------------------------------------- Autofoc us is slow specially when its dark or the objects are moving. But there is a continuous mode as in other coolpics cameras where you can select the best shot image from a sequence. Again it is slow here and just manages a speed of 0.7 frames per second for my SanDisk SD card. The buffer is also not good enogh to store all sequences.
It suffers from image noise problem. This might be because of high resolution of 12.1 MP.
Shutter Lag is also slow and hence not recommended for continous photography requirements as in sports or events.
Image Quality is too Good and colours are strong and hence I call it a Sharpshooter. Automatic white balancing and D-Lighting features are very good . Red Eye reduction is also excellent.

OVERALL you have to compromise with speed to get more features and sharper pictures than other digicams in similar range !!!
Dont buy it from Argos if available there. I bought it online as I was getting many accessories free on the scheme. But now its painful to see that prices are dropping below 200GBP !!! But thats life !! Electronic items always keep getting cheaper.
Advantages: Easily handleable and extensive pre-programmed settings. Disadvantages: Slightly slow at taking the pictures at times.

It is small, pocketable, sturdy and easy to handle. The pre-programmed settings in "scene" are excellent with a good range to choose from. I think there is a need for short cuts though as there are quite a few to scroll through.
It was essential to me to have a screen and a view finder as screens are so tricky to use in sunlight. It has taken a while to get the hang ...
