This is the first camera I have bought in a while due to having little time to fit photography into my busy schedule. It was nice to have another go with a new camera so I thought I might as well write a review as well.
The camera has an optical zoom of 24x which enables you to take pictures at a much greater distance to other cameras of a similar size, which was really useful, quality didn’t decrease when using the 24x zoom, something that impressed me. The camera also has an impressive 12 Megapixels which ensured that it gave really high quality pictures and enabled me to zoom in really closely on certain features when the pictures were transferred to my computer. Further improving the quality of the pictures I took were 4 types of image stabilisers including vibration reduction and motion detection, these helped to eliminate the effects of any accidental movement when taking pictures and were very effective.
It has an impressive articulated 3 inch screen (pretty good for a camera) on the back of the camera which made taking photos at awkward angles much easier, such as being able to photograph something small on the ground side on without getting covered in mud :-).
This camera had a large number of features and buttons, most of which I’ve not tried yet, included on it such as an ability to mess about with the settings of the camera in user mode, I recommend not trying this unless you know what you are doing, or only change one thing at a time if you don’t. I managed to make an remarkable mess of my camera the first time I tried. Thank God (well Nikon) for the reset to defaults option! It also has a favourite scene feature which, stating the obvious, lets you go to your favourite/ most used scene. It also has a continuous shooting mode which shoots several photos in a row when you press the button once, allowing you to pick the best one and thus giving you a much higher success rate with pictures, this has allowed me to pretend to be a much better photographer than I am as it exponentially increases your chances of fluking a really good picture. The camera has a pretty good integrated flash. The Nikon P90 hasn’t fallen into the ‘small as possible’ electrical craze and is very ergonomically designed making it even more of a pleasure to use. It has an impressive battery life, I haven’t managed to run it down.
My Verdict
A great camera with a fairly reasonable price tag, I would recommend this to any fellow photography enthusiast as I have had a great experience with it.
