I bought this camera from Curries via their website for £169 back in 2006, so it is relatively old now, and in terms of the advance in cameras, is almost an antique! You can now pick one up for a lot cheaper, around £65, but I think they're being slowly phased out, so if you want one, get it quick.
When I first bought it, 5.1 Megapixels was considered relatively high, whereas now, anything towards 9.1 or 10.1 megapixels is becoming the new bench level. However, unless you are a really keen photographer, you won't really notice too much difference.
What attracted me to this camera was it's looks. It is a lovely little camera, and in black it looks stylish and sleek, whilst also being very compact; there's no extruding lens or other parts sticking out, so the camera is very flat which is extremely helpful as it can just slide in and out of your pocket, and it also gives it a sturdy feel. I've dropped this camera I can't count how many times, but it still works absolutly fine, albeit with a few nicks and scratches!
The screen is more than adequate at 2.5 inches, and comes in handy when taking pictures and reviewing what you've captured; a bigger screen always helps! The camera only have a few buttons, all of which are self explanatory, and most useful of all, the actual capture button is the biggest of the lot, so it's obvious which one to press (something which i've often found difficult with some cameras)
In terms of features, the S1 is quite well catered for. It has three modes, automatic, pre-programmed mode, and video. The video is about the quality you'd expect, not great, but definitely at an average level (it records at a resolution of 640x480). Automatic mode simply takes the best photo it can; the camera analyses the conditions, and simply selects the best settings. With the pre-programmed mode, you get a vast array of different settings, from landscape to sports, night time to indoor, underwater to sunset. These are great for a beginner photographer, as they allow you to take really good photos compared to the automatic mode!
The camera features a 3x optical zoom lens which produces fantastically clear photos, and has a very long battery life. It takes SD cards, but can only take a maximum of a 2GB card which soon gets filled up unfortunatly; I took this to Australia and was constantly deleting photos to make room for more. Maybe I shouldn't take so many...!!
What I will say is excellent about the camera, is it's ease of use. I'm not one for reading manuals, and with this camera I didn't even need it once! It is such an easy camera to operate, with simple easy to navigate menus and a whole host of easy to access settings, this really is a great "point and shoot" camera. I've taken many beautiful photos with this, and it really captures colours well. I took it on a holiday recently, and the blues came out amazingly, along with deep reds of a lovely sunset.
So would I recommend this camera? Maybe not, but that's not to do with the camera. This review comes a little late I'm afraid, and technology has moved on, so this is a relatively old camera, and I would recommend getting a more recent camera which will last longer for you. However, if you do decide to buy this, I have only praise the camera as it has served me very well over the years, and is still a great little camera to use.
