I wouldn't say that the D40 is an everyday point and shoot camera, though if you set it to auto it will do focus, shutter setting, apperature and all other settings.
The screen is good for viewing all photos you have taken and can also edit the photo with clever tricks like cropping. It is 2.5 Inch which I find to be standard to most camera.
The 6.10 Megapixel resolution provides a crisp photo. This is not nearly the highest onthe market though. But it is better than some other brands 12 megapixel camera because the sensor is so good.
I got my D40 with a lense that came with it. It has a focus ring and a zoom on it. The lense is 18 - 55 mm AF-S Nikkor and is quite good, There are lots of compatible leneses including a 55 - 200 mm one made specially for this camera.
The camera take SD and SDHC cards. The SD cards tend to be more expensive than the SDHC cards (Standard Digital High Capacity). I got an 4GB SDHC card from the Internet for £19.99.
The battery is rechargable and the Camera comes with a LiIon battery as well as the recharging unit. The charging unit itself has an LED to tell you when it is charged.
The camera weighs just less than 500g which is incredible for an SLR.
I got my one for £335 just 3 months ago and as I understand the price just continues to fall.
Nobody can praise Nikon enough for what they have done. They have released a small, light, affordable Digital SLR.
You can set the camera to many settings depending on what you want to do:
AUTO - The camera will Do everything for you. Including flash and focus.
AUTO NO FLASH - The camera will do everything without a flash.
AUTO PORTRAIT - The camera will set its settings to take a portrait.
AUTO LANDSCAPE - The camera will set its settings to take a landscpe photo.
AUTO KIDS - The camera will set its settings to take a photo of a child. It brings out more colours with this setting.
AUTO SPORT - The camera will set its settings to take a photo of sporting activity. It will realise that subjects will be moving.
AUTO STILLLIFE - The camera will set its settings to take a photo of close up still life.
AUTO NIGHT PORTRAIT The camera will set its settings to take a portrait at night.
MANUAL - There are manual settings that allow you to change the shutter speed, aperature and focus but I have not used them much and have instead stuck to the aforementioned automatic settings.
There is an inbuilt flash but there is also a place to add on a flash gun at a later date but I have not felt inclined to do this as teh standard flash is very good.
The camera on a whole is very easy to use for people who are just starting photography. If you get stuck I found the instruction manual very helpful.
