I've been using this camera for 8 months now and continue to be totally satisfied. The camera is a near-perfect balance between price and features, a perfect starter dSLR for a beginner. I recently bought a Nikkor 18-200VR lens for my D40 and plan on buying a SB600 flash. In current setup the camera is a perfect travel companion - I recently took a two-week trip to Croatia and Slovenia with it and it served me well. Most important, the end results were really good.
The user interface, both buttons and menus, are easy and intuitive, no need to even open the manual. Supports SD(HC) cards, so storage is cheap. Perfect balance in hand, nice weight, good ergonomics.
Unfortunately no AE bracketing which I sometimes miss when trying to take HDR shots, but I use a tripod or any other sturdy object for support and can manage. Also the lack of internal focus motor sometimes becomes a disadvantage.
