Digital camera - 10.2 Megapixel, 10.2000048828125 - Optical Zoom: 3.9 - Weight: 545 - Flash memory: CompactFlash Type I, Type II - Viewfinder: Optical Viewfinder
This is my first digital SLR camera I really like taking pictures of mainly our families dogs and cars my main hobbies, my other half had previously had been using a digital SLR that belonged to his dad, so we both went a long to Jessops that is well know for selling really good photography stuff. We had a look at various models of camera including the Canon Eos 400d which is one of this cameras biggest rival models, also looked at four or five other digital SLR models. Then eventually we started looking at the Nikon D40x my other half knew someone who had the previous model to this the Nikon D40 which had been really good, the other half had used it previously and found it a really good quality camera. So after a lot of really useful and helpful advice from the shop assistant in Jessops we chose the Nikon D40x it had everything we wanted including a sport mode which was the main feature I wanted, as border collies don't keep still for very long! Me knowing absolutely nothing about digital SLR cameras was just happy to have a cool new camera get it home and try it out.
** The Nikon D40x Features **
*Auto-Focus Just like the previous model (D40) this camera has an auto focus feature all though it does not have a built in focus drive motor, so only works with lenses that have their own built in drive motor, suitable lenses for this feature are AF-S and AF-I lenses. The auto focus is brilliant for fast moving dogs and cars and anything else that moves so you can get pictures quickly, features of the auto focus include… Three area TTL phase detection, Nikon Multi-CAM530 auto focus module Detection range: EV -1 to +19
10.2 mega pixel DX format CCD (1.5x FOV crop) which makes pictures come out in an excellent quality showing every detail.
3D Colour Matrix Metering II, 420 pixel sensor
Nikon Image processing engine
New Multi-CAM530 three area AF sensor
ISO sensitivity range 100 - 1600 plus HI 1

Help suggestions on LCD monitor - scene too dark, try using flash)

USB 2.0 with PTP and Mass Storage device support
Very compact, light body
Improved menu user interface
New EN-EL9 Lithium-Ion battery New 'Version II' AF-S DX 18-55 mm kit lens
In-camera retouching which includes… D-Lighting (shadow / highlight enhancement) Red-eye reduction Trimming Monochrome Filter effects Small picture Image overlay
** Usability & Looks **Having never had a digital SLR camera before I am still learning about all the features of this camera, for people who have had digital SLR cameras or have used them before this camera is really easy to use my other half took to it straight away being able to use all the features he needs to take amazing pictures with it. I am working my way through all the little features it has at the moment, it has various settings that can be used when the flash is on so that there is not so much glow back from the flash which makes the pictures quality far better than if you just put the flash on and used it. I don't use the manual focus very much but once again the other half does and has done so very successfully all though are other cameras that do have a better manual focus function. I much prefer to use the simple option of auto focus.
There are various exposure modes I mainly use sport but the others are
Auto Flash off Portrait Landscape Child Sports Close up Night portrait Programmed Auto Shutter-priority auto Aperture priority auto Manual
The Nikon d40x is available in both black and silver, I have the black version which is the most common. The Nikon D40x is very compact looking and well laid out for ease of use and also adds to these cameras good looks.
** Picture Quality **
I have taken loads of pictures with this camera since having it and have always been pleased with them, they are really, really sharp and you can see all the detail of what ever you are photographing. The Nikon D40x takes brilliant pictures even when the light is not great as long as you use the cameras settings and features correctly to help improve the picture quality. The buttons and dials on the camera are easy to understand and use it is also a very light weight camera being both smaller and lighter than the Nikon D50, it has a safety strap to put around your neck to save your dropping it and damaging it when trying to get pictures. The camera itself it easy to hold with bits at the side to grip perfectly in your hand. The zoom is really easy to use and means you can picture things further away without disturbing them such as wildlife, this can also be made easier by purchasing a bigger lens add on.
Lenses are widely available for this camera as are tripods for taking pictures where you want the camera extra still.
** Price & Availability **
These cameras are around £500 and come with cash back offer that Nikon are doing at the moment, you get a voucher when you get the camera and you send it back to claim money back. The Nikon D40x is available in most camera shops and catalogues as it has not long been out. You can get various deals when you buy these cameras from new including kits with tripods, lenses and bags to put it away safe it. These are definitely worth while getting as a package as it will safe quite a bit of money in the end.
There is no point me going on any more about features I am sure these can be found out all over the internet personal opinion is where it is all at!
** My and My Other Half's Opinions **
I love this camera it is by far the best I have ever had if you are still using a standard digital camera I really would consider a digital SLR, I have found this brilliant as a first digital SLR I have since having this one used others and they haven't been as good as the Nikon D40x I am really pleased with all the pictures I have taken with this camera, I don't get blurry action shots no matter how fast the thing I am taking a picture of is moving. I am looking forward to getting a big lens for this and taking it to the car shows over the summer, it is easy to carry around taking up no space what so ever and being able to be carried around by the shoulder strap that came with it. Other half also loves this camera he finds all of the cameras features really useful and is using one or other of them every time he takes pictures. People we have taken pictures for have always commented on how brilliant the pictures have come out the quality and how sharp they are. Often asking what camera we are using. Obviously it is never going to be as small and light as some of the normal digital cameras but it is well worth the extra weight, size for such quality pictures. It helps capture moments and things that we can keep for ever and be proud of and even put them on the walls in frames.
I have also found the instruction book rather usefull I do not normally even bother reading them but it has benefited the picture quality result I get as it has been most helpfull and is not in terms that can not be understood without mass knowledge of digital SLR cameras.
I would definitely recommend this camera to anyone wanting an upgrade from a standard digital camera to a digital SLR or anyone looking for a new digital SLR as I am sure those who have had digital SLR cameras will realise the good quality of this one. I also see Nikon as a trusted brand with excellent quality products produced and brilliant customer service.
Advantages: Small, feature packed, easy to use, Built in Help system, auto and scene modes Disadvantages: only three AF points, manual not so good
...though the Canon 400d and Nikon D40x did seem to be the market leaders. I then found that the K100d had been superceded by the K100d Super and the price had gone up closer to the canon and Nikon.
I spotted an offer at Currys of a Nikon D40x with 18-55mm lense for £405 plus a 55-300mm nikon lense for an extra £30 and on top of that buy now (with no deposit) pay next september. I couldn't resist. I am glad the offer came around because in the end ... ...System
I have had the Nikon now for a couple of weeks and I am very pleased with what I have got. Some reviews say that the D40X relies to heavily on Menus. I know this is my first DSLR, but I have not found that to be a problem. One press of an info key and all the relevant settings are displayed on the LCD, another press and it is then possible to change the settings. It is also possible to see graphically on the info screen the size of the aperture. ...

Advantages: Compact for an SLR, easy to use, excellent picture quality. Disadvantages: Battery life only allows 1000ish photos to be taken
My review is about the Nikon D40x Digital Single Lense Reflex camera.
For the last 3 years i've been taking photographs using my dad Konika Minolta Dynax 5D, but as of a few months ago i've moved in with my other half and no longer have access to my dads camera, so before christmas it was decided that we needed our own digital SLR.
I'd got a couple of models in mind, the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40, they both did what I wanted of them and ... ...thats when I spotted the Nikon D40x, it hadn't come up in my searches on the internet and turned out that it was a better version of the D40 and had a 10mp CCD instead of just 6mp.
I had a play with the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40x and decided that the D40x was a far nicer camera to hold and use and wasn't much more expensive (only about £20).
Whilst I was in the store I decided it worthwhile (being as they would also work out cheapers) to ...

Advantages: Excellent image quality and build Disadvantages: Average value for money, limited choice of lenses
...motor, the camera only takes Nikon AF-S lenses, which have a motor built in. The standard lens is an excellent starting point, but if you want to expand your collection a sensible choice would be the Nikon AF-S 55-200 VR lens, which will allow you to zoom in more on your subject.
The 10MP sensor coupled with a high quality lens ensures great photo quality. The camera offers 10 modes. A beginner should start with the Auto mode, where the camera decides ... ...are several creative modes, which largely change how the image is processed. Then come the manual modes, which offer enthusiasts more control.
The D40x is an excellent option for first time DSLR buyers who want a camera that will grow as they grow as photographers. I would highly reccomend it, but if you cannot afford it would also reccomend the D40, a similar camera. ...

I bought the Nikon "kit" which comprised the body, an 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens all for less than £500 which I reckon was a good deal. There are still plently retailers that will only let you have the body and one lens for this much.
My only complaint is the lack of choice as far as lenses are concerned.
Basically to get full functionality with this camera you have to use the Nikon DX range which at present is fairly limited / ...

Advantages: fantastic value for money Disadvantages: some older lenses will not auto focus
...down to 2 choices, the nikon d40x and the canon 400d. these are both brilliant cameras for their price but the nikon performs slightly better in my opinion and is about £30 cheaper. if you are comparing this to the earlier d40 i would highly recommend paying the extra money for this as the extra 4 mega pixels will be vital if you are planning on enlarging your photos to anything bigger than a3. the optical quality of the 18-55mm kit lens is outstanding ... ...which produces slightly soft images when enlarged to bigger than a4. Features of this camera include ISO range 100-1600 (extendable to 3200) 4,000 shutter speed etc. all of this info is displayed on the rear lcd screen. there are 2 display modes, one is classic which displays your info in a text only format or there is a graphical mode which displays diagrams and illustrations to show what is happening inside the camera. for example when changing ...

...This is my first ever SLR digital camera and i love it! I would recommend to anyone who enjoys photography or not. Its a good hold, perfect picture quality and its perfect for the price. You can buy some SLR cameras which are expensive, but you could gain alot more from just buying a NikonD40! Has a good clear colour LCD screen, powerful flash, easy to access memory and battery, comes supplied with everything you need to start you off. I've been told that Canon are good makes, but to be honest, the picture quality i think is so much better on this camera, plus this camera is only a 6 megapixels, so am guessing the NikonD40x which is a 10 megapixel camera, is proberbly the best camera around at the moment! I would buy any Nikon camera again, no dout....

Advantages: One of the cheapest dslrs on the market Disadvantages: build quality not as good as nikon d40x
...I compared this with the nikond40x which is nikons equivilent of this camera. the 400d is a great entry dslr and takes excellent photos. however i would highly recommend upgrading to a better quality lens as the images produced are not quite sharp enough compared to the d40x kit lens and the auto focusing can be a bit loud. i would recommend either the nikon or the canon the 400d. is an excellent camera for the price and has more than enough features to occupy most photographers for years. one feature i find very useful is the integrated cleaning system built into the camera, every time you turn the camera on it vibrates the surface of the sensor to remove any dust particles, this is a lot safer and cheaper than having to buy an additional cleaning kit and a lot of new slr users may prefer this if they are not comfortable in doing it...

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, easy to use, expandable. Disadvantages: Expensive.
...package deals that include accessories for this camera.
My dad has taken quite a few pictures with this camera and is really pleased with the out come, photography is one of his main hobbies (and used to be his job) so he knows quite a lot about SLR and digital SLR cameras.
He has found it easy getting pictures onto the computer and editing them with amazing results and pictures he can be proud of, the camera itself is easy to use and does not take long at all to work out all of the functions all though if you get stuck there is a really useful instruction manual included within the box.
Compared to our NikonD40x which I highly rated not long ago this is an excellent camera and would certainly recommend it, but much prefer the price of the D40x....
