As a newcomer to digital slrs and slrs altogether i have spent hours trying to decide which camera to buy. i narrowed it down to 2 choices, the nikon d40x and the canon 400d.
these are both brilliant cameras for their price but the nikon performs slightly better in my opinion and is about £30 cheaper. if you are comparing this to the earlier d40 i would highly recommend paying the extra money for this as the extra 4 mega pixels will be vital if you are planning on enlarging your photos to anything bigger than a3.
the optical quality of the 18-55mm kit lens is outstanding compared to the 18-55mm lens that comes with the canon which produces slightly soft images when enlarged to bigger than a4.
Features of this camera include ISO range 100-1600 (extendable to 3200) 4,000 shutter speed etc. all of this info is displayed on the rear lcd screen. there are 2 display modes, one is classic which displays your info in a text only format or there is a graphical mode which displays diagrams and illustrations to show what is happening inside the camera. for example when changing the aperture there is a diagram on the left of an iris getting bigger and smaller as you change the f number up and down.
there is also in camera editing software such as red eye correction, filter effects such as grayscale and sepia. there is also a built in help menu which includes recommended settings for aperture, shutter speed and iso with an example photo.
the build quality of this is compareable to some £500+ cameras and much more durable than the canon 400d. the only disadvantage is there is no internal drive motor which means that some older lenses will not be able to auto focus but sill work in manual focus mode.
You can pick this camera up from ebay for around £400 which includes the camera body, the 18-55mm lens, and usually a 2gb memory card.
also i would recommend the 55-200mm AF-S ED VR lens, it is the perfect addition to complete your camera setup which can be bought on ebay for under £130 total.

Advantages: build quality, picture quality, ease of use Disadvantages: very occasional difficulties with auto focus, no anti-dust protection for the sensor
