Had no experience with camera's, certainly not DSLR's, so this was a large cost for something I wasn't sure would be the ideal camera for a beginner. I needn't have worried, and all the reading I did before, was justified once I began using this Nikon D40X. Even my father wants to use it now, and he's got a few camera's himself.
For those who may have expected it, don't think you will be able to see the picture you want to take through the LCD screen BEFORE you take it. It doesn't display the image until you have taken it... there's me thinking I'm missing a control, or used to using phone camera's... if it's a quirk, then that's about the only one it has.
I bought several books, and seem to be taking to it very well. The manual is not great, but the camera has some great help menu's to gently push you along. Do read up on the camera, it won't take those quality shots without you understanding what each setting is for. It will take those shots though, and is doing so very well for me. For a direction, try looking into the Magic Lantern guide books, they have one specifically for this camera, and I would recommend it.
The camera is slightly heavier than I expected, consider the tripod option. It has a fairly easily way of holding the camera, and I've not had cause to worry about dropping it. You do treat it carefully when you know the value, but it has good finger contact with you at most times.
All in all, I think I made the right choice. Without trying too many others, I can only summise on this model, but others will recommend a starting camera, and this is certainly a great starting point.
