My review is about the Nikon D40x Digital Single Lense Reflex camera.
For the last 3 years i've been taking photographs using my dad Konika Minolta Dynax 5D, but as of a few months ago i've moved
in with my other half and no longer have access to my dads camera, so before christmas it was decided that we needed our own digital SLR.
I'd got a couple of models in mind, the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40, they both did what I wanted of them and were around the right price.
Having researched them on the internet and finding somewhere to go look at them off we went to Jessops
in town to have a look at them.
I asked the assistant if I could look at and have a play with both and thats when I spotted the Nikon D40x, it hadn't come up in my searches on the internet and turned out that it was a better version of the D40 and had a 10mp CCD instead of just 6mp.
I had a play with the Canon EOS 500d and the Nikon D40x and decided that the D40x was a far nicer camera to hold and use and wasn't much more expensive (only about £20).
Whilst I was in the store I decided it worthwhile (being as they would also work out cheapers) to purchase a few accessories for the camera:
Lense Filter (UV) basically to stop anything damaging the lense, it's cheaper to buy a filter for a few £'s than a whole new lense.
Tripod, I love taking night shots and timed exposures so this was vital.
Accessory bag, big enough for any additional items in the future and lalso a smaller regular digital camera.
Lense cleaning cloth, don't want to damage any of the expensive glass!
After we'd paid for the camera we left the shop and hurried home (I was excited to play with my new toy!)
Unpacking the camera and setting it up was relatively simple, the assembly instructions were very clear, the hardest part was
putting the shoulder strap on! (which wasn't difficult, just a bit fiddly)
We also made sure that the registration card was filled in and sent off as it gave us £40 back!
After the supplied battery had charged up I popped it into and started to work my way through the menus.
The menu system is very simple and is controlled by the four way button on the back of the camera, it allows you to change and select many different modes such as continous picture mode which allows you to take up to 3 pictures per second.
The buttons on the outside of the camera are very clear and easy to use (even for big fingers).
The dial on the top of the camera is easy to use and select the various modes, to name a few:
Auto, sets up all the modes accordingly so you can just point and shoot, also employs the flash if necessary
No flash, a relatively new feature which totally disables the flash and boost the ISO (CCD sensitivity) ideal for places where you aren't allowed to use a flash.
Scene modes such as landscape and sports mode which sets the camera up accordingly for the various modes.
Manual modes, M/A/S/P, shutter/apeature priority and full manual mode.
The camera we bought (as most do) came with a 18-55mm lense which is ok for general shots and landscapes, we do intend to purchase a 55-300mm lense shortly for taking car show/racing and dog agility photos in the summer.
The image quality compared to my previous DSLR is outstanding, the CCD may only be 10mp but the sharpness, quality and JPEG compression is excellent.
The camera itself for an SLR is very compact and light (compared to other brands) and the shutter noise (lense reflex) is very quiet.
There are many manual and indepth modes that this camera has, many I have yet to need to use so is ideal for both the professional AND the ameature photographer.
All in all this is a very VERY capable camera that does everything and more that I need an would definately reccomend it to anyone looking for a Digital SLR.
I have put some photographs i've taken on here so you can see the photo quality for yourselves.

Advantages: build quality, picture quality, ease of use Disadvantages: very occasional difficulties with auto focus, no anti-dust protection for the sensor
