I first bought the Nikon D40X for my Photography Degree, about 3 years ago. At the time, there was no doubt that it was considered on the fringe of 'professional' cameras, however it is now, sadly, deemed 'amateur'. That being said, for the price (especially now), this camera is really very good. The image quality on the highest JPEG setting is very good, despite the compression which the JPEG format entails, and the Raw format is excellent. Its quite a light camera, so its fairly easy to take with you on holiday or day-trips.
Its also nice and fast on its captures - the rate with which it goes from snapping the shutter closed to popping up on screen is very good, and definitely betters some of the other cameras I have handled for my degree. For a starting camera, I would say that this is a brilliant camera.
It does however have some drawbacks; I have found that the auto-focus can get jammed if you've been anywhere particularly dusty or sandy, and it needs a good clean with a brush and a soft cloth (such as those used to clean glasses). The battery life indicator can also be a little misleading, as I have had the camera cut out on me when its been at that last third of the battery point. Having said that, this is more of an issue with the Nikon battery, as it suffers when the flash is used frequently.

Overall, I would say that the camera is a brilliant starter, for anybody thinking about photography seriously. It has an Operating System that is easy to use, great quality, and is light enough for most adventures.
