Since buying the camera, I have tested it out rather thoroughly and I have to say, I'm ecstatic with its performance and image quality. Using the auto point and shoot mode, the camera's auto focus is lightening fast which makes the subject of your photograph sharp. The live view feature also helps you to capture a high quality picture with very little effort. One thing that had concerned me about buying a DSLR was the amount of time it would take to prepare a shot. I didn't want to be struggling to adjust settings for a quick snap, but the auto mode takes care of this.
The 19 scene modes are also very helpful for photographers like me who are just getting started with DSLRs. There is a scene selection for nearly any mood or setting imaginable. This means that the D5000 adjusts exposure and focus automatically.
Lighting has always been somewhat problematic for me. I always found it difficult to capture 'natural' lighting. I would always end up with faces washed out by the flash or landscapes that were far too dark. The D5000 offers fantastic lighting solutions. Firstly there are a number of different flash settings that are easy to switch between. But the D5000 also offers D-lighting, which prevents over exposure and other lighting problems. It can even be applied after the photo has been taken.
I love the in-camera editing features. You can adjust everything from colour to size without the aid of a computer of fancy editing software.
Some features which I hadn't come across before, such as the ISO and exposure compensation are remarkably easy to adjust. Each feature is displayed on the LCD and if you press the 'i' button you can access a number of menus to change these settings to your taste. I had to read the manual very carefully to understand what all these settings did, but the clear explanations were very easy to follow!
The camera also has a video mode, which I am yet to try out, so can't comment on it yet.
Overall, I believe that this camera is value for money and would suit a photographer wanting to move away form amateur compact cameras, but not wanting to spend a small fortune!
Advantages: large resolution, great photos, easy to use, great battery life, great fun! Disadvantages: obviously its not a £2000 plus camera
I bought this camera June 5th 2009, it cost me close to £900 but so far has been worth every penny!. im sure if you have got to the point of reading this review you are well aware of the specs if not thats the best place to start. while looking for a DSLR I looked at this and the 2 other price range competitors the Canon EOS 500D and the other NikonD5000. this was a very hard choice I found that while playing around with all 3 in shops the D90 had the best video, and more vibrant pictures than the Canon. but that still left me with the two nikons the only thing that separated them in my books was the screens the larger screen on this D90 or the smaller lower resolution on the D5000. and as i like to take lots of photos and look at them i went for the D90. I have never looked back. I use the Camera for taking the normal photos holiday ...

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, lots of useful features, well designed controls, great kit lens Disadvantages: More expensive than some other DSLRs, quite big and heavy, limited movie mode
charge and lasted for weeks! Even when I use the screen and flash a lot, it only used half the battery after taking around 800 pictures on 2 week holiday.
Lenses
I would definitely recommend the 18-105 kit lens you can get with the D90. It has the VR vibration reduction feature, a speedy auto-focus motor and good image quality and a long enough zoom for all your everyday shots (much better than the 18 -55 lens that comes with other D models like the D5000). I also have a 70 - 300mm zooms lens for basic wildlife shots, which I bought on ebay for around £80. The D90 has the advantage on an inbuilt auto-focus motor, not found in the smaller bodied D40, D60 and D5000. This means that all Nikon lens can be used, rather than just the newer AF lenses.
Disadvantages
The only disadvantage I can think of aside from the price tag, is ...
