This is a fantastic introduction to digital SLR cameras and the quality is extremely close to much higher priced models. The construction is lightweight but very sturdy and pleasant to adjust. There are also all the automatic and customise-able features you would expect from a good SLR. In all honesty the weak link is my skills and the D50 does all it can to compensate for my lack of talent.
Having added the 70-300mm lens to my collection I'm more than equipped for any situation, from sports to portraits to night photography. I've got a a 512Mb memory card and I struggle to fill it whatever the quality settings. Battery life is more than adequate for most needs.
The same could be said of the Canon EOS350 - another fantastic camera - so it really comes down to price and compatibility with any existing accessories you might own. At the time of writing the D50 was about £100 cheaper than any equivalent model, EOS350 or Pentax *ist DL2. The Nikon 'Pictureproject' software is adequate but most people would recommend Adobe Photoshop over any company's in house code.
My advice is get the cheapest SLR of the three, spend your money on the best lens you can afford and the rest on photography lessons. Profesional photographers would struggle to notice the difference between the D50 and £2000+ models. A fantastic camera and one I'd definitely recommend to all but the most highly qualified photographers.

Advantages: Excellent Entry Level DSLR, at a cheap price and aesthetically pleasing Disadvantages: Lens isn't up to scratch with the new Sony's, and no form of image stabilisation
