As a professional photographer for nearly 30 years, I expected to be dead and gone long before digital cameras could rival the image quality of 35mm film cameras, let alone my trusty medium format Hasselblad!
How happy I am to have been proved wrong.
When my £15,000 Hasselblad kit was stolen last year and the insurance wouldn't pay out, I needed an affordable stopgap until funds would allow a more expensive purchase.
My 35mm gear has always been Canon, whose cameras have always delighted me. And yet I've always had a feeling in the back of my mind that Nikon lenses were slightly superior.
I set off with the intention of buying a Canon 350D , and, in the shop, my heart told me that was the camera for me. My head had other ideas! The build quality of the Nikon and especially the lens included in the kit made my mind up for me. I left the shop feeling like I'd commited adultry, but, since then I've had no reason to doubt the wisdom of my choice.
Quite simply, the Nikon D70s can take superb quality photos.
I find the menus quite intimidating at times, and sometimes trying to change settings in the heat of the moment can be very frustrating. This is probably down to me being a Luddite and used to cameras without so much as a built in meter.
On the programme mode, however, for most people , the camera will be able to produce excellent results every time.
Since buying the D70s, I've used the D1x and D2x and both are superb cameras with many additional features and capabilities. For me, though, the increased complexities are not sufficiently offset by any discernible improvement in picture quality.
I may look at the D200 with its higher resolution sensor, but, on the other hand I could buy another D70s ( a camera I've come to know and love) for much less money.
All in all, I couldn't recommend the Nikon D70s too highly.

Advantages: Great battery life, and still a great camera. Now even cheaper to get hold of. Disadvantages: Not as many features as later models. Sensor can get dusty, though there are tools
