One of the key advances developed for the D80 is its high-resolution image-processing engine. At its heart is a dedicated high-performance processing chip that greatly accelerates...
more...performance on all levels, while also consuming less power than its predecessors. It also inherits advantages developed exclusively for Nikon's latest professional digital SLR cameras, combining color independent analog pre-conditioning with improved 12-bit digital image processing algorithms. The result is natural-looking images that benefit from faithful color and tone reproduction. The level of performance attained allows the engine to rapidly and efficiently process the 10.2-megapixel resolution images captured by the DX Format CCD image sensor.

Full review
2 1/2 years ago Nikon announced the six megapixel D70, their first affordable enthusiasts digital SLR, it proved to be a very popular camera and strong competitor to the Canon EOS 300D.

Just a year and 1/2 later Nikon revealed the D70s which was essentially the same camera with a some subtle tweaks (improved AF, wider flash coverage, higher capacity battery, larger LCD monitor). And so just over 1 year on from the D70s Nikon present the latest incarnation of their 'enthusiasts' digital SLR line, the ten megapixel D80.

This is how companies get you in the net - bring out a product costing £750 and then release a new model in 12 months time costing the same - you then kick yourself wishing you'd waited and like some people wanting the best, they sell thier old model for £400 and buy the new model. Now thinking they have the best - the company releases another new model!

And the idea goes on!!!!!

The D80 slots nicely between the entry-level D50 and the professional D200, based on the D70 design but also different enough to be seen as a completely new model. It features a ten megapixel DX format CCD (the same I presume as used by Sony in the DSLR-A100), the metering sensor from the D50 and numerous other items taken or modified from the D200.

After talking to a person from a camera shop near where i live and him showing and explaining and then even taking the trouble to email me a whole host of information about the similar and different components to a camera i have come to the simple conclusion (that i bet most other people come up with) that most of these 'highly professional' SLR cameras are all the same but in different bodies & brand names.

I purchased this when it first came out in addition to my little Fujifilm A360 (for general snaps) and then after getting into the love of photography (very quickly) i purchased this after seeing the many advantages of going SLR

I think this is a great camera - but i am going to as this is my FIRST professional camera!

I would obviously recommend this but then again who wouldn't?
