It is camera which has done justice to all lovers of photography and Nikon fans in particular. It has almost lived up to it’s promise and more than satisfied all who has been eagerly waiting for it which was an almost foregone conclusion after Nikon D80 was launched exactly 2 years ago. To cap it all it is the first camera to support movie capture which must be accepted as a revolutionary but expected addition into the features of a DSLR.
It will be a big mistake to assume that it is just a routine upgrade of Nikon D80 because it provides some significant enhancement over its predecessor and has made itself the most sought after camera the world over in spite of being very expensive. It has done NOT only Nikon 80 proud but also Nikon itself.
Comparisons and criticism will always be there but nobody can deny its class and quality. It is true that the competition will come not only from Canon with its cheaper Rebel Xsi, Sony’s Sony AlphaDSLR-A700
(12.2 mega pixel), Pentax K20D (14.6 mega pixel) but mainly from its own 40D (10 mega pixel) which must be a great source of pride for Nikon. The company has made out a niche of coming out with super quality cameras and has justified the faith of millions with the Nikon D90.
At 132 x 103 x 77 mm (5.2 x 4.1 x 3.0 in) weighing 585 g (1.3 lb) without battery and: 668 g (1.5 lb) with battery the Kanon D90 is definitely on the bulkier side compared to others in its price range but it more sturdy and substantial for that matter. Some of its features are similar to the D80 like the size, uses the same battery and has similar vertical grip.
Talking about the upgrade from D80 the first and foremost is its new CMOS sensor which is claimed to give D300 quality output at up to even ISO 6400, the other features that has been copied into D90 is the highly acclaimed 3.0 in VGA screen as the D3/D300, the Live View with contrast detect AF and not surprisingly it is provided with dust removal system. The big addition or the revelation of D90 is its Movie Mode (720p HDTV quality, please note), HDMI output, has limitations though, with other similarities with D80. It has much better shutter speed and the 3D tracking AF has been implemented as in D3/D300.
It’s only expected that D90 will appeal to the broadest possible audience of Nikon SLRs for its user friendly behavior minus the costing of D300. The Nikon D90 comes in two versions 1) body only 2) a kit with the 18-105mm f3.5-5.6 lens.
Any body who is accustomed to shooting with Nikon dSLRs will have no problem since the comfortable hold, control layout and navigation carries the stamp of Nikon’s dSLRs. For others there always is a move over acclimatization required. But generally speaking Nikon has its white balance, ISO, and quality buttons on the left side where other manufacturers prefers to have them on the right hand side. The dedicated Live View Finder button is on the right hand side of the LCD along with a switch to lock the navigation from moving the set AF point, four way navigation switch plus OK button and context sensitivity button. It is a bit odd that you can change limited number of parameters and again the one you can change, are hardly changed, like AE-L/AF-L button settings and so on. I would have definitely loved to have access to make changes in the one touch raw-format toggle.
The Nikon D90 add face detection to its Live View which is an enhancement enabled by retouching done to its Expeed image processor. Additions like an integration or expansion of Active D-Lighting parameters, improved controls, up to nine slots of custom picture control parameters uploadable to Nikon’s Capture NX 2 RAW-processing software. They in fact program on their own shifting to lower shutter speed as it senses necessity. Nikon D90 includes access points for Nikon’s GP-1hot shoe GPS device.
My main objection or a source of hindrance is the new 18-105 mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens. Its too wide and long for typical shoots (but great for covering ranges 27-157 mm in 35 mm equivalent) the Canon kit lenses seems to be a bit sharper than D90.
Nikon D90 has 11 point AF 3D tracking mode. It is exceedingly responsive, no complains on that, it is neck and neck when compared to continuous shooting speed with D300, just think (it’s not on paper, but it achieves in practice)? Enable the flash bump it’s a good 0.7 secs, normally 0.2 secs to power up and ready for the next shoot. Give it more trying situations the shot lag is just 0.3-0.4 secs, amazing. The highest lag is 0.9 seconds.
But Nikon has its special problems too! Nikon D 90 tends to under expose (ask any Nikon diehard they will agree, all Nikons have this problem) But in totality it’s perfect.
I just wish it shot at a higher frames per second. The zoom requires manual focusing, small hiccup but manageable anyway.
Yes now the most novel part. The Movie mode is great without peers but not with out jitters. May be they have file format problems. Nikon’s 24 fps does not really match with 23.976fps which most TV processors expect, so the playback jitters bound to be there.
Even if it’s too demanding to your pocket, it’s worth it. Save money.
