Since I've used it I really appreciate the ease of use of auto focus, although if you main subject is off centre you have to recognise this and take control. ... ...to use and a thumb wheel allows you to very easily adjust the shutter speed/aperture combination. Underwater I use autofocus all the time and TTL with an external flash which works very well. Although now I come to the one failing I have found with the camera. I moved to the F60 only because I wanted a camera I could put in a housing and use underwater. Since I've used it I really appreciate the ease of use of auto focus, although if you main subject is off centre you have to recognise this and take control. Above the water the auto exposure modes are very easy to use and a thumb wheel allows you to very easily adjust the shutter speed/aperture combination. Underwater I use autofocus all the time and TTL with an external flash which works very well. Although now I come to the one failing I have found with the camera. All the auto exposure mode use matrix metering and you have no choice in this. If you're shooting a main subject close up with the background some distance away the camera fires the flash at full power to try to light the background. In doing this the flash burns out the main subject. Underwater I always use manual exposure. In manual mode the TTL uses Centre weighted metering rather than matrix and this solves my problem. What I really want on this camera is the option to use centre weighted metering on aperture priority.

The F60 is a reasonably capable (but fairly basic) entry-level SLR. Discontinued now, but can be bought very cheaply secondhand. The body has a very plasticky feel to it; the plastic is slightly textured, but it isn't covered with any grippy substance (eg. rubber) at all. This makes the camera feel cheap (which it is) and fragile.
The camera has a fair amount of preset shooting modes (this could be good for a beginner) in addition to the usual P, ... ...30 secs - 1/2000th sec + B, flash sync is 1/125th sec. The motor wind is slow (only 1 fps), with continuous drive only available in "sport/action" mode (as is continuous AF).
Being an entry level model; the F60 only works properly with either AF, AF-D, AF-G lenses. AI or AI-S lenses can be used, but the lightmeter won't work. AF-S lenses allow the lightmeter to function, but the AF won't (AF-S lenses are probably beyond the reach of many F60 owners, ...

as a former died in the wool, manual focus only, AF is for wimps sort of snapper I've always avoided this kind of photo-gear..but I have to admit that trying the F50 & F60 out last year was a treat
only actually had it in my possession to teach someone the basic principles of photography as they were getting an F60 to take to Antarctica as part of a UNESCO trip but after only a short while, and seeing the cracking results that my formerly photo-dunce ... ...features, pin sharp focussing, simple controls for novices but with advanced settings ideal for the higher level user this piece of photo-gear is a great bit of kit and I liked it so much...I bought one for myself! Ditching a few older bits of equipment I got a handy boxed set and have only one small complaint...battery life ain't as good as it could be and no audible low battery-level warning signal to give you some notice!
Otherwise, good gear! ...

I bought a Nikon F60 as my first camera as my dad always had a Nikon and I wanted a quality camera too.
It's robust, easy to hold and operate, takes great pictures, but I have one complaint.
The focus button is also the button that you press to take the picture. So it's happened quite a lot that the picture can't auto focus (for example it may be dark) and the camera just goes mad zooming in and out forever blurred). Even when you think the light ... ...it all over again, if Nikon does any cameras without a dual focus / taking photo button I would buy that since this is a great camera except for this flaw. My boyfriend just looks on in boredom sometimes whilst I try and take a picture and it does not want to !
Buy it if the price is amazing. ...

This is a great camera for beginners. It was the first digital camera I bought, I was still a bit sceptical about digital, thinking I couldn't be quite so creative at the camera as I was with my NikonF60 (how wrong I was there).
Changing from an SLR to this was a bit of a back step and I wouldn't do that again. However, this camera was a good choice to learn a bit about digital photography. The results are good quality, in the main, it's easy to use and the flip LCD is a definite advantage on sunny days.
I enjoy macro photography and, I have to say, I've had some great reslts with this. There are several programmes to choose from but, having said that, I did find it quite limiting. I like to use manual focus sometimes and found it very difficult with this camera. The lack of aperture choice in comparison with an SLR was ...

After years of shooting with an autofocus NikonF60, I wanted to get back to full control using my excellent manual focus Nikon prime lenses.
I had a Nikon FE for many years, but its auto-exposure capabilities had broken. I was very sad to see that old friend start to decline. While the FE continued to have accurate shutter speeds, I didn't want to carry around a separate light meter or guess at exposure using the "sunny 16" rule.
I picked up an F-301/N2000 on eBay for a reasonable price, in excellent condition. Like the Nikon FE, it's built like a tank, but gives me even more capability than my trusty old FE, such as a reasonably brisk motor wind, single or continuous shooting, DX film capabilities, film speed override, exposure compensation, AE-lock, full manual exposure plus two program modes on top of the FE's Aperture ...

At last, a professional level affordable digital SLR camera. At £2400 its affordable if you are 1. Rich, 2. A professional. I fall into the later category and use the S1 for interior photography for an Estate Agents magazine. The quality is outstanding although its not a true 6.1 million pixel camera. Fuji use some clever software to interpolate the 3 million pixel CCD and hypothetically get the 6.1m. That said, the quality is superb, sharp and with excellent colour redition. Download is fast through a USB connector and the storage using the 1GB IBM drive is amazing, 430 images at the top jpg resolution, over 5000 at the lower resolution. No need to take the laptop on holiday with you now! Build quality is not bad, it uses the NikonF60 body as its base which whilst being a lower end plastic body, still maintains the Nikon reputation ...
