(+) Fold out LCD screen, Image Stabilization, Zuiko lens quality, Picture quality, Flash options (-) Noise in low light, Too many buttons, Badly laid out, Too many gimmicks
Advantages: Build, reliability, image quality, functions, the name & value for money especially second hand Disadvantages: to heavy for some, slightly noisy focusing, lenses and flash units expensive
I owned a Nikon F301 in my teens and that camera was brilliant!
I then caught the Auto focus bug and purchased a Canon EOS 100 which took brilliant pictures nearly as good as the Nikon and the auto focus was ultra fast and you could hardly hear it focusing, the Nikon is not as quiet but not to noisy.
Anyway i like the sound of the motordrive being loud.
The thing that really bugged me about the Canon was that ... ...very plasticy.
I was sure that if I dropped it that would be the end of it!
So after a couple years I was tempted back to a good solid Nikon.
At the time the F90x was recieving rave reviews in the press and that was good enough for me.
On getting it out the box the first thing I noticed is the weight of the thing! Which to me is a good thing..it feels as expensive as it was..if you know what I mean. more

The thing that really bugged me about the Canon was that it was TOO lightweight! It felt like a toy and very plasticy.
Put the five AA batteries in and a Lens on the front and this thing is well heavy..but I like that weight.
Battery life is good, the motor drive is brilliant, not as quiet as the Canon as is the focusing (and the focusing does 'hunt' a little more than the Canon did).
I tend to leave the Camera on Auto mode and let the Matrix metering do the work which it does very nicely. (the Lazy way)
I switch to the Spot meter mode if I'm taking Portraits or want a 'perfectly' exposed shot in tricky situations but the camera in full auto does a very good job. I wouldn't trust it with Slide film though as the margin for error is not a s big as with print film.
It has numerous 'program modes' for portraits, sports, Landscapes etc. How usefull they are I do not now as I have never tried them.
The depth of field preview works nicely, this is a usefull feature for landscapes and portraits to check whats in focus and whats not at different apertures.
You can change flash modes on the camera with out taking your eye away from the viewfinder..red eye reduction prehaps the most useful.
The self timer can be set from 30 secs down to 3secs.
You are able to lock the focus easily if required and also the meter reading can be locked by a switch on the back till you release pressure on it. Handy for those moments you need to use the spot meter.
The motor drive can be set to 4 frames per second or 2 frames per second and the focusing set to either 'single shot' or 'continueus'. (single shot will only take a pic when the focusing is spot on and continueus uses a progressive system that predicts where in focus will be)
I am slightly disapointed in the overall image quality, but I'm prehaps just imagining it.
I'll be hanging onto this Camera though even if i do go digital.
I have seen F90's going on E Bay for around the £300 mark..good value there.
If you can't afford a brand new F100 go for one of these.

Quick review of Nikon F 90 X
Solid, robust, excellent build quality and reassuringly heavy. Mine never let me down once in 8 years.

...have owned and used a Nikon F90-X for over 3 years, and have found it faultless and very solid. A bit on the heavy side perhaps, but the pro grip (vertical shooting) and the very accurate matrix metering system more than make up for this. As always with Nikon, the lenses are impeccable (if expensive). Also like all other 'pro' Nikon cameras, they really hold they're value on the seconhand market. Now digital photography is evolving so rapidly, I ...

Advantages: Reliable, durable, cost effective and overall a brilliant quality camera Disadvantages: A touch on the noisy side maybe
I shoot black and white most of the time, with colour film only coming out for wildlife shoots, and i have to say that the f90x really hits the spot when it comes to black and white art photography. The metering system really gets it right everytime, my prints are always as i imagined them in the viewfinder and this is extremely valiuable. For wildlife work the speed of the camera really shines through, coupled with the advanced tracking autofocus, ...

Advantages: Ease of use Disadvantages: Cost can be prohibitive
...uses either autofocus or manual Nikon lenses. It produces top quality photographs and is a pleasure to own. The camera is easy to use and I personally do not use it to its full potential. It is easier to use it for taking photographs with the same settings in wedding photography. It is not worth experimenting with wedding photography!
Overall i am very impressed with this camera. It is quite pricey but is well worth the money in my view. ...

Advantages: Very adaptable - easy to use Disadvantages: Weight
This camera has all the functions anyone could want. It's totally automatic, semi-automatic and manual with great variations. The ease of use is a great selling point. The various options will keep the photographer happy for hours. Shoot a single frame, or 2 per second or 4+ per second. Take between 30 seconds and 8000th of a second! Do it on auto ot manual. The various option for lenses gives the camera great flexibility. This is a great camera ... ...makes the amateur feel as if he is able to take better pic's and inspires you to do better all the time. Although a little heavy, this also adds to the sense that you are holding a camera of substance. As you can see, I can only boast about this gem of a camera because I love the feel of it, its ability and the sense you are holding a piece of expensice hardware! ...

Advantages: Lightweight and easy to use Disadvantages: Manual focus can be tricky
had this camera many years as an upgrade to my Pentax P30n as i wanted to try an autofocus camera.
There are a large array of lenses available for it. You can use Pentax lenses or for a wider range, try the likes of Sigma or Tamron. Both these other makes are as good if not better than the Pentax lenses available. Both silver or black coloured lenses look good on it due to the fact that both are present on the cameras body.
Manual lenses can be used but they arent easy to use as the focus screen makes it almost impossible to get the focusing spot on. If using a long focal length lens at the infinity setting the focusing is less of a problem.
The max shutter speed is 2000th/second this is adequate for most purposes but it would be nice if it was as fast as a NikonF90x (8000th/second). It also has a bulb setting so you can go as slow as ...

Advantages: Nikon name, rubust, performance, compact, looks Disadvantages: non really..
Before I went Autofocus (Canon then NikonF90x) this was the camera for me.
I don't know if its just me but I have not been able to capture the same brilliant 3D type of image this camera gave me with all my other cameras.
Maybe it is just me..I was into photography in a big way back then and had more time and patience to get it right, fiddling with the settings. (before I got lazy and just let the camera do the lot!)
But I am tempted to buy another F301 of ebay to see and for nostalgia's sake.
I can not remember that much about the technical side of it but I can remember the viewfinder being very bright and informative of the settings.
Its meter is centre weighted only which in a way is better than the new 'matrix' meters which take readings from different areas of the image and you never really know what its doing ...

Advantages: Good user interface. Excellent manual controls. Good value. Disadvantages: No cable release or PC socket. Lens aperture obscured.
The NikonF801s is still one of the best SLRs made by the company, and is worth seeking on the used market.
I bought a used example to upgrade from the earlier NikonF501. I was specifially interested in the F801s onboard spot meter and better autofocus. I did not want to spend the cash for the new F90x as I would rarely use all of the features. I found a very clean used F801s for about 275.00. It came in the original box with all instructions and accessories.
The shutter release is very fast and smooth, with no lag time. The camera will take Nikon AI or AIS manual focus lens. Older Non-AI lenses can be mounted, but provide no automatic or metering functions.
The autofocus is swifter than the F501, but by no means up to the new F90x speed;that's fine with me as I only use autofocus about 25% of the time. Manual focus seems more ...
