I have a 70mm to 300mm Sigma zoom and a 28mm to 80mm sigma zoom and this small standard 50mm lens.
The lens costs about £90 new or around the £50 on E Bay.
For everyday photography, I don't think it can be beaten.
The two main advantages are its size and its maximum aperture of f1.8. For the peeps that don't know anything bout photography....the smaller the no. on the lens, the more light it can let in...hense f1.8 being better for available light photography indoors than the f5.5 on one of my zoom lenses.
The small/lightweight standard lense on your camera will drastically reduse the risk of blurred pictures due to 'camera shake' because a zoom lense makes the camera more unstable and magnefies any camera shake..the bigger the zoom the worse it is.
This smallness coupled with being able to use the high aperture to let most light in means that it is possible to take good pictures in doors in the daytime without the need for using 'unflattering' flash.
The f stop positions are good and precise, you can change to manual focusing if required with the small switch on the lense.
It is not to 'plastic' like some lenses and still has that Nikon feel about it. Focusing is fast...Very fast.
Not much else to say about it really except I myself love it and it gets used more than the other lenses. Its very good for taking available light pics of your missis in not much clothing!

Hi :o) good start to your review, but I guess my problem with it was that you've written it assuming that I know something about photography. Sadly, that's a fair way from being the case, although I'm interested in it! Providing more detail, or explanation of why have f1.8 is a good thing, etc, would help a lot. HTH, Cate.

It is such a good lens you almost had a Vh from me here, cause it is a great lens. Another paragraph would probabally have done the trick ha hah, put a little bit more detail in if you can be bothered, and ignore what 99% of the people here say.
