Manufacturer's product description
This lens is being developed as the first truly compact, lightweight AF-S Zoom-Nikkor lens to offer the VR (Vibration Reduction) function. The lens is targeted at professional and advanced amateur photographers to whom the advantages of high optical performance and high speed are top priorities. The lens not only features Nikon's exclusive built-in SWM (Silent Wave Motor) for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet operation, but also employs Nikon's VR system, which minimizes blur caused by camera shake. The VR system allows the use of slow shutter speeds in dimmer conditions. There is also Active VR mode available, which compensates for the intense vibrations experienced when shooting from a moving motor vehicle, ship or helicopter. This lens delivers superior optical performance thanks to the incorporation of five ED glass elements and high-grade Nikon Super Integrated Coating. The lens also offers a fast constant maximum aperture of f/2.8 at all focal lengths. It is ideal for professional-level photographic needs.
Advantages: Superb quality, great value for money! Disadvantages: Much heavier than its competitors
...This lens is one of my favourite lenses of all time! It is strong, reliable and incredibly sharp. The action on the zoom is smooth yet sturdy, and the auto focus works just as fast (or certainly not noticeably slower) as the far more expensive Canon version.
Even the bag that comes with it is classy and stylish, as is the slick black body of the lens itself.
The only possible complaint that I could have is that it's quite heavy, which makes it almost impossible to get a sharp picture when hand-holding at anything greater than 100mmzoom.
Overall though, I couldn't be happier with this lens, and it certainly offers amazing value for money when compared to Canon
and Nikon versions, which are several times more expensive, with no noticeable difference in quality!...

Advantages: quality otics, very rugged, smooth focus Disadvantages:
...Nikon have produced an PRO AF lens with rugged construction and magnificent quality optics. This f2.8lens is perfect for use in available light, sports and press photography. Watch any paparazzi line up and you will see many press men using this lens as their main work horse.
This balanced lens is a dream to use in both Auto Focus and manual modes. Nikon have not sacrificed the ease of use in manual mode as tends to happen with cheaper lenses. The combined focus / zoom control is excellent for fast manual use.
If I had to choose one lens and no other, this would be the one for me....

I recently purchased a sweet Canon 400D/XTi Rebel from Amazon.co.uk (£45 cashback!) and this standard zoom lens (Canon EF-S 18-55mm) came with it.
As far as I know, you cannot purchase the Canon EF-S 18-5mm on it's own, as it's designed specifically... more
