Full review

This is the third year on the trot that my daughter has requested a new Nintendo DS light, the first time as a novelty item and the fact that they could be bought in pink. The second year due to the fact she has knackered the screen or at least the sensitivity of it and the third year due to the fact that you can know take pictures!
This time I refused to buy her it myself, making her save her birthday money to buy the unit, unfortunately she is seemingly very spoilt and had enough money to buy this and two games, so much for teaching her the value of money!

The product I will now review is the Nintendo Dsi computer.

The unit itself looks exactly the same as the last unit she had, now with me being a complete computer novice, I did wonder whether we were being shafted and given the same as we have already got, and to be truthful I am not to far wrong with this statement.

The colours are different, before Kaitlin has had a pink one and a green one, this time she has had a black unit.
The case itself is made of mat black plastic and this time has an almost slip resistant covering rather than a sheen that the previous one’s have had.

The features available are - 2 x LCD screens, the contrast of these liquid crystal displays can be altered to one of 5 levels, this can be done as before through touching the lower touch sensitive screen to alter.

There are also the power button and control buttons, these again are the same as the previous unit, a cross shaped curser button, the Y,X,A and B buttons, and finally the start and select buttons.

There is an audio jack slot, to fit headphones or microphones into, though obviously if headphones are attached nothing will be played through he speakers.

Along with the built in speakers there is also a built in microphone, this on the original unit was specifically to play along with the appropriate games, but in this unit there is a function to record sounds and voices, I will go into this a little later.

The new element to this unit is of course the built in cameras. These are situated on the top corner of the unit, on the outside part and one located centrally just above the lower touch sensitive screen, this is perfect for photo’s of your friends and also to take a photo of yourself.

To set the unit up you simply follow the onscreen instructions, these being -

Power on, choose your language and country of residence, set the date and the time. You then choose a username, and at this point I would like to point out that this is the name that you will pay under, NOT a password, my daughter choose a name I knew she would never remember and told her so for her to come back with this vital piece of information, god did I feel sneeped!
After that you can enter a brief message, this is for configuration, but you could also put a self greeting message for each time you switch the unit on. The next stage is to choose a colour and set you date of birth.

The final stage is not obligatory but ideal due to the features on this unit, these being parental controls. These in a nutshell simply restrict the child (if it is indeed owned by a child), from downloading inappropriate games, talk to unknown people via pictochat and downloading or uploading photographs to again, unknown people.

Once you have gone through these your system will automatically start up and you will be ready to play games/take pictures.

When the unit is switched on you will be given the option of either playing games, or taking photographs.

This is again explained fully through on screen instructions.

To take a photograph of yourself you simply tilt the camera to take the perfect shot of yourself, this will automatically be saved into a file within the unit, this holds around 500 photo’s.
To take photo’s of anything “outside” the unit, ie not the player you simply press the X button or tap the “switch” button on screen with your stylus, and this switches between the inner and outer camera.

To take the photo you simply tap the “capture” button and there is a second delay before the picture you have just taken appears on the upper screen.

This where the fun begins, you have the option to either “mess” with the picture before taking it or after. The options include a setting that turns your picture into a hall of mirrors photo, distorting picture. You can frame, draw on, add wigs, hats moustaches….. The choices are quite extensive and fun! I have actually been just turned into Mario out of the Super Mario brothers, much to my children’s delight!

To record sounds you simply tap the sound button which will there in your menu selection, through this you are given the opportunity to record your owns sounds and voices, and like the photo element, play around with them.

To record a sound you simply pick an empty balloon on screen and then press record, as soon as the unit picks up a load enough sound it will start recording, to stop you press ok. You then pck a coour from the list and this will stay in the memory of the unit for you to tweak until such a time as you want to delete it!

You can alter the recordings by placing filters on them, these range from budgie through to tunnel, this keeps the original sound but adds new elements to the top layer of sound.
You can then change the speed in which the piece is placed, either slowing down or speeding up, with there even being an option of changing the pitch of the piece, this again is achieved in the same way as the previous options.

You can also play your own selection of music, via the SD memory card, thus creating top 10 favourites, though I don’t really see this being a useful addition, my daughter usually has her MP3 player going when playing on this!

There are other built in software features, these being the game feature, I mean after all that is a big part of this!
The others being DS downloaded play, this again doesn’t have to be restricted in my house as the only other person with a unit is my sister, and even though she is 25 years old, she plays the same games as my daughter does!
Pictochat, which allows you to send pictures and messages wirelessly, again she only ever uses this feature with my sister.

Finally there is the DSI shop, this allows you to buy games via the internet, thankfully my daughter hasn’t got hers set up for this, god knows how much would be bought and spent!

There are the obligatory extras that come with this unit, these being a spare stylus pen, a must if your children are like mine, I spend half my time searching for these runaway items! And also a charge for the unit, although this unit seems to have had a small charge before buying it, no doubt it will need a good few hours charge later!

This unit is available from so many places ranging from the extortionate (£179), through to the very reasonable which is what I paid £139, this was just for the unit.
There are few package deals to be had, all with a couple of games thrown in, though we never bothered with these as A, my daughter has a few games already and B, the games included in the deal were not very good and not worth the extra money they were asking for!

Our place of purchase was Toys R Us - www.toysrus.co.uk

Was it worth the update…..not really! The unit apart from the photographs and sounds, is the same unit, and even though the new elements are fun, I can’t imagine them keeping anyone thoroughly entertained for long periods of time.

Thanks for reading x

DSi - Good but don't rush to upgrade
Review of Nintendo DSi by pevil

Advantages: Built in internet, downloadable games, image and sound editing, plays DS games
Disadvantages: Region locked, no GBA slot, low mega-pixel cameras

...You'll be able to purchase Nintendo Points which can then be used to download exclusive DSi games to store on your DSi and add to your collection. As with the DS Lite, the download play and Pictochat functions are also still available here. Built-in Memory If you're downloading games you need somewhere to store them. So the DSi comes with some built-in memory this time around. I'm not sure how much it is but imagine it should be enough to store ...
...and of course it can always be extended with the SD card. Hopefully this will also be used in conjunction with games to create faster loading. General Rework The machine itself looks very similar to a Lite but has in fact had a slight reworking. Many people preferred the power button to be 'inside' the DS, as in the original, and so it has gone back to this position on the DSi, though it is towards the front of the machine rather than by the ... Nintendo DSi meets WPA-PSK
Review of Nintendo DSi by TheSnore

Advantages: Can now access WPA-PSK secure networks
Disadvantages: No audio or video on the web browser

...thing I notice about my Nintendo DSi is it's texture. It feels like... a dried emulsioned wall. I open it up, turn it on and it asks for the basic settings. Date, time, your user name, your birthday. It doesn't initially ask you for your wireless settings, you have to click on the wrench icon to set wireless up. Now our wireless network is set to WPA-PSK and I wasn't sure that the DSi allowed connection to this type of secure network. (You see, ...
...Once you have the Nintendo DSi connected to the internet, it asks you if it can take a system update. After it's taken it's update it will turn off. The advertisements say the Nintendo DSi can get on the internet. Yes it can. But... the browser supports neither audio nor video so there's no Youtube :( Now.... The sound quality is heaps better than the DS Lite, I had a little play with the sound recorder feature, I recorded a couple of sentences ... Read review

Nintendo DSi
Review of Nintendo DSi by AlexanderBanks

Advantages: Graphics, sound, extra features, value for money, ease of use, manual, Manufacturer Support.
Disadvantages: No GBA slot, need Wi-Fi to get the most out of it.

The Nintendo DSi is the third generation of the Nintendo DS handheld gaming console series. HAS ANYTHING GONE? The GBA slot has gone so you can't play your Game Boy Advance games on the DSi, but I won't miss this feature too much! However, with this feature gone, you can only play 99% of DS games, 99% because for the DS version of Guitar Hero, you need the GBA slot. NEW FEATURES Screen Length: Now 3.25 inches long! Sound is better: Now your sound ...
...find the graphics on the Nintendo DSi amazing. They look better then the graphics on some laptop screens. I think they are brilliant. SOUND As I've said, the sound has improved and I really mean it! It's more amazing then some surround sound systems! All the games when compared to the sound quality on the normal DS, to the sound on the DSi, DSi stands out better! Big Transformation... worth £50 though?
Review of Nintendo DSi by Faehndrich

Advantages: DSi Camera and camera editing software, DSi Shop, DSi Music capability, use of Previous DS games
Disadvantages: £150 price tag is a bit high

..."enjoy the rich library of Nintendo DS games", however I beg to differ, one of the games I have been looking forward to having for a while was "Professor Leyton and the Curious Village" I purchased it off of eBay but when I tried it in my DSi it didn't work, then I tried it in my friends DS lite and it worked perfectly. Now I don't know if this was just because it was I had bought a dodgy one form eBay or if it is the game. All I'm saying is when ...
...there aredefinately compatible with the DSi. So would I recommend this to anyone? To be honest only if you can get it for cheaper than £150. It is a great system and all but I managed to get a deal at GAME, I traded in my decent condition DSi and two games for a £100 DSi card, and ended up purchasing my DSi for £50. However I don't know if that was only a DSi preorder offer. However there are bound to be more offers, if not go to a site like eBay ... Read review

Review of Nintendo DSi by jacjas

Advantages: nice look and feel improved graphics and sound better control buttons
Disadvantages: some few fairly pointless bits of software built in

...a replacement for my old nintendo ds lite, and handed my old ds down to my daughter to stop her stealing the others from her sisters. i was excited to see what the DSi had to offer and have to be honest on first impressions when opening the packaging was pleased with the new look and feel of the new matt finish and slimmer feel, however upon first switching the console on and exploring the new functions found it a little tricky on how to play with ...
...knowledge of anything "techy" is very limited) but with a fair amount of practise and rummaging around soon got to grips with it i have to be honest the camera and functions and the music/ recording functions have been mostly appealing to my 9 year old daughter who rarely plays with her DS lite, so for me except for the look and feel of the console i personally haven't reaped much benefit other than the kudos of having the latest gadget in front ... Nintendo DSi Ware :Moving Memo
Review of Moving Memo (DSiWare) by  sari111

Advantages: easy to play
Disadvantages: none

...Nintendo has announced two new games for download service of the western DSI, DSiWare will appear: Moving Memo and Wario Ware Snap. Moving in Memo you can draw things and then to life with animations. In Nintendo's speech at the Game Developers Conference, some examples. If your own Super Mario level make the hat of Mario blow a child on a skateboard and a plane that flies signs. These are simple examples but the options are endless. This game seems quite interesting, and very easy to play when the game-compare with other games. Wario Ware Snap uses the camera on the DSI. You have to pose for the camera with your hands and face various mini games to play. Then you see a video of yourself how you make the movements. There were no details on price or release date of the software, but we expect that the games not long after the launch... Read review

Got a DS? Buy Nerf Armor now!
Review of PDP Nerf Armor for Nintendo DS Lite, DSi, PSP by  randomreviews2

Advantages: protects the ds lite and dsi
Disadvantages: bulky

...Nerf has decided to throw their hand into the gaming accessories market with Nerf Armor which is available for the Nintendo DS Lite, DSi, and PSP Slim. This item is a must have because these systems are extremely fragile. You could be looking at a high repair cost if their system is damaged. So its best to invest in the Nerf Armor. Chances are if anything does happen to your system, your warranty probably already expired. One major problem players have complained about all over the internet is that the DS Lite is highly susceptible to hinge fracture which can ultimately lead to the system losing complete function. Repairing it on your own is a daunting task unless you're a tech head. The Nerf Armor cushions the system in a sturdy foam case, which absorbs damage from a drop. It won't hinder gameplay at all - all buttons and ports are... Read review

Everyone should have one!
Review of Nintendo DS Lite by  damefine2002

Advantages: Many games and you can use Gameboy advance games plus its portable
Disadvantages: No camera

...I brought my nintendo ds lite last year although I was pretty sceptical at the beginning as the new dsi was launching soon I went ahead and brought it. Although the screen may be smaller and there is no camera I would say this is one for the whole family as me and my family have battled against one another playing games such as brain training. Furthemore it is far less bulky and big as the previous model and comes in various colours unlike the older and newer models. Another great thing about the DS lite is that it has WiFi which comes in handy when you have a game you want a friend to try who also has a DS, so you can battle one another. I thought that the price for a little game was much but how I was wrong. Get one if you havent yet, you wont regret it.... Read review
