The DSi is the new version of the DS from Nintendo, hailed by themselves as being in essence the 'DS 2'. So what exactly makes it different from the DS Lite, and is it really worth upgrading? I was able to get my hands on one today and give it a test run.
Features
The DSi does everything the DS Lite does and more. I'll list the features here then go into more detail below.
Reworking of the buttons, larger screen, better sound
Games
The DSi will be able to run 99% of DS games. I say 99% because they have removed the GBA slot, so any guitar hero games that make use of that slot will no longer be playable. However this is a minor matter. The slightly more annoying fact is that the DSi will be region locked, so gone are the days of importing cheaper or earlier-released games to play. They are however going to be releasting DSi only games; quite what that
means I'm unsure yet but I would assume they make use of the cameras.
SD Memory Card
An SD memory card slot has now been introduced onto the side of the machine to increase storage and allow you to import pictures and music from your pc, camera or wii. This of course works in reverse, so once you've manipulated your files on your DSi, they can then be ported back to the device you wish to put them on.
Two 0.3 Megapixel Cameras
0.3 Megapixels doesn't sound too great, and indeed it will never be an amazing picture that you can capture. However on the DSi screen the pictures are surprisingly clear and sharp. One camera is located inside the DSi on the hinge and faces the user. This seems to be the default one that is used, and I guess will be used in upcoming DSi-only games. The other is located on the top of the DSi and works as a regular camera, pointing away from the user. A small pink light appears next to it when this camera is selected to show it is in use.
Image and Sound editing software
The DSi comes with image and sound editing software built into its system, though I didn't play around with the sound editor. However the image editor is quite an interesting little tool. Upon taking a picture with the DSi camera, or importing one from an SD memory card, you are presented with an array of options, from distortion to mirror imaging to clipart. You can even take two people and merge their faces together! Aside from this there are many more options including filters and effects.
Built-in Internet Access
To me this is what really sets the DSi apart from the Lite. Anyone who owns a Wii will notice that the interface is very similar, with 'slots' to put different 'channels' in. One of these is a downloadable browser, allowing access to the Internet. However certain functions are limited (such as the video playback capabilities). Where it really shines though will be the release of 'DSi Ware', which is essentially like Wii Ware and means Points = Games. You'll be able to purchase Nintendo Points which can then be used to download exclusive DSi games to store on your DSi and add to your collection. As with the DS Lite, the download play and Pictochat functions are also still available here.
Built-in Memory
If you're downloading games you need somewhere to store them. So the DSi comes with some built-in memory this time around. I'm not sure how much it is but imagine it should be enough to store quite a few games along with your channel set up, and of course it can always be extended with the SD card. Hopefully this will also be used in conjunction with games to create faster loading.
General Rework
The machine itself looks very similar to a Lite but has in fact had a slight reworking. Many people preferred the power button to be 'inside' the DS, as in the original, and so it has gone back to this position on the DSi, though it is towards the front of the machine rather than by the hinge. The volume has moved around to the side and is now a simple +/- button rather than a slider. The stylus has changed proportion slightly again in order to provide comfort and the machine itself is fractionally smaller and lighter still, though I personally couldn't see the difference. The sound quality has been improved upon and also both of the screens are slightly larger than before. At launch it will be available in 'Stark White' or a new, improved 'Matt Black' which will no longer show those horrible fingerprints the instant you pick it up!
Conclusion
Overall the DSi is a rework of the Lite with some added features, attempting to appeal to those last few who have held off getting one of their handhelds. I would highly recommend this console to anyone who has yet to buy a DS of any kind, or anyone who enjoys technology and gadgety type stuff, particularly for the image and sound editing. For those of us who already own a DS of some kind, well I personally shall wait a while. With most places retailing around £140 or £150, the extra features it offers me aren't worth the extra £50. I must admit that I was very impressed with my first use however and may be tempted yet!

(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
