The first thing I notice about my Nintendo DSi is it's texture. It feels like... a dried emulsioned wall. I open it up, turn it on and it asks for the basic settings. Date, time, your user name, your birthday.
It doesn't initially ask you for your wireless settings, you have to click on the wrench icon to set wireless up.
Now our wireless network is set to WPA-PSK and I wasn't sure that the DSi allowed connection to this type of secure network. (You see, the DS Lite doesn't.) So I was pleased when the DSi noticed my security settings and told me I'd need to go to ADVANCED to set it up. OOhhherrrrrr I thought (expecting it to ask for all sorts of information), but all it did was bring up a different list of wireless networks (ours included) and ask for the security key. OK, that was simple enough.
Once you have the Nintendo DSi connected to the internet, it asks you if it can take a system update. After it's taken it's update it will turn off.
The advertisements say the Nintendo DSi can get on the internet. Yes it can. But... the browser supports neither audio nor video so there's no Youtube :(
Now....
The sound quality is heaps better than the DS Lite, I had a little play with the sound recorder feature, I recorded a couple of sentences then played them back, the quality was crystal clear. There are little tools with which you can edit the recorded sound such as pitch shift, tempo change, and four different effects including an effect sounding similar to the teacher off Charlie Brown.
The Nintendo DSi has two cameras. You are given a brief but effective tutorial when you first select the Camera icon. I played for a while with the “lenses” then the novelty wore off. Oh.... even if the volume of the Nintendo DSi is totally off, if you take a photograph, there is still a “clunk”
The screens are bigger than on the DS Lite, there's no Gameboy Cartridge slot, so games that use that slot will not play as well or not play at all. There is a SD card slot though. So you can store your photographs, put them on your computer, print them off etc.
Is it worth upgrading yet if you already have DS Lite? I can't honestly say. We have two DS Lites and are happy with them, so why did I decide to buy a DSi???? Because I heard it had better sound? I heard it had bigger screens? I heard it could get on the internet? All those things are true. But... the real reason I bought it was because I wanted to know if it could access the internet using a WPA-PSK protected network where the DS Lite couldn't and NOONE (Comet, Currys, Game, GameStation, HMV) could tell me. . Well now I can tell them. The answer is YES.
I wouldn't recommend it to a friend because I think they'd be spending money on features they don't need.
*** UPDATE - 10 June 2009 ***
Nintendo responded to an email I sent a couple of days ago enquiring about WPA-PSK. This is the significant part of their reply.
"The DSi does indeed support WPA-PSK security, but I’m afraid this would only applicable to DSi-sepcfic applications. These would include the DSi Ware shop, web browser and online play with DSi-specific games that will be released in the future. Unfortunately, existing DS games (such as Pokemon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum) can only be used with WEP-enabled networks, even when played on a DSi. "

(+) Plenty of storage space, for media. Good Games, Great for partys, with singstar. Very Reliable. (-) Sometimes the optical drive, breaks; but not very likely, my 60gb still working after 2 1/2 years.
I want to get a DSi because I think the internet on it would be practical for me, and I don't have a DS yet.. good review, I now know a little bit more about it.
