Nintendo has finally reached the 21st century, by coming up with the ability to allow players to play games over networks, as you would do with online games on the PC. Even Xbox and Playsation 2 owners have had the pleasure for a fair while now. Nintendo has been slow, but it is gradually getting there.
It's great to be able to play games with friends as opposed to just alone vs. the computer's artificial intelligence (which sometime can be plane daft, or cheat-like!). However, it isn't always possible to have friends over. So what is the solution?
The solution is this broadband adaptor for the Nintendo GameCube console.
If you decide to purchase one of these you will find one Nintendo GameCube Broadband Adapter and the instruction manual. The box, the manual and the adaptor itself are all produced to a high quality, as can always be expected from Nintendo.
In order to play games online with the Broadband Adapter, you will need an ethernet cable with an RJ45 connector (I have acquired and provided an image at the bottom of the review).
Chances are that you will already have this cable in your existing DSL or cable modem connection to your PC. If you do, you will effortlessly need to remove this cable from the back of your PC and plug it into the Broadband Adapter to play Nintendo GameCube games online. There are some instances in that some DSL or cable modems do not use an ethernet cable, but instead use a USB connector.
However, the Nintendo GameCube Broadband Adapter is not compatible with USB connectors. If your DSL or cable modem uses a USB connector, then you will be forced to take one of the following options:
1+ You will have to check the back of your DSL or cable modem to see if it has another outlet called an "ethernet out." It resembles a larger version of a phone jack. If you have an ethernet out, you can purchase an ethernet cable with an RJ45 connector and connect it to your Nintendo Broadband adapter.
2+ Or - if your DSL or cable modem does not have an "ethernet out," you will have to check with your internet provider to see if a different modem is available that uses the ethernet out.
3 +The final option is to purchase a modem adapter for the Nintendo Gamecube.
You will obviously need to be next to a broadband modem near where you will be playing your Nintendo GameCube. Once conencted with a game online you will automatically be taken to the gaming site. You will not be able to use these games or the Nintendo GameCube Broadband Adapter to "surf" the internet.
As I mentioned in my Nintendo Gamecube adaptor reveiw, there are currently no games (apart from) that actually use these internet gaming facilities. Bare this in mind, as a broadband adaptor costs £49.99 - and a regular game costs £35. As things stand, I advise spending your money on a game if you are willing to spend this on an adaptor, that is currently rather redundent.
Nintendo Gamecube adaptors currently appear to be in huge shortage, however when they do show up they can be found at braches of 'Toys R' Us' and they can also be located at Amazon.co.uk if all else fails.
