Back in the days when men were men and sheep worried a lot, the Nintendo SNES was one of the first true video games machines around for the home.

Like another writer (and many others I guess), I got a SNES machine back in the early 90's. Me and Mrs D got it second hand from one of her cousins and conned ourselves (as you do) that it was actually for our young son (Yeah right!). It went up in the top of the wardrobe for Xmas and we got a couple of games (for him, you understand) to play on it, including Donkey King Country.

Of course, we had to try it out to make sure it works (again and again and again and again) and soon got hooked on the bloody little git. I remember I couldn't break the hold the console had on me and I just HAD to finish the whole game, which I eventually managed to do, although I did hate the section down in the mines where they faced some particularly nasty pieces of crocodile work. I managed to find the cheat that got me round that particular problem pretty early on I'm glad to say.

I remember Bethany dave27 bouncing along in one of those hammock like baby seats with us unable to do anything but gaze intently into THE BOX while we watched DK and Diddy do their stuff. Aaaah, salad days...

After that little escapade I was hooked and I still think DKC is one of the best games ever.

We soon started getting a load of other titles for the console and I remember thinking Formula 1 was the bees' knees when I 'borrowed' it off Rick 3p Macdougall (don't ask).

We were pretty miffed (spot the understatement) when we found Nintendo weren't making any more games for the machine and were going down the route of a new console. We had to sit there revelling in the glory that was Earthworm Jim and that unfathomably hard underwater globe race.

Now EWJ was one of the better games we found and even got me to leave DK behind and that certainly took a lot of doing.

I love this machine and everything about it. The graphics may look naff when compared to today's all singing and dancing versions, but you can't beat a good game. My controls and my thumbs were soon worn to a frazzle by this little demon. Shame it's a relic these days...

You can still get some games via the second hand market and swaps, but everything's swapped on to new consoles these days and it looks like the N64 we bought about 18 months ago is also on the way to the antiques mart - what nice people the Nintendo bods are...
