...in which dave27 and Mrs D cry "We love the 80's..." and rush headlong over the cliff edge of style and into the pits of middle age...
Back in the days when men were men, sheep worried a lot and I could still just about make out my feet somewhere nestling underneath my stomach, the Nintendo SNES was one of the first true video games machines around for the home.
Like many others I guess I got a SNES machine back in the early 90's. Me and Mrs D got it second hand from one of her cousins and conned ourselves (as you do) that it was actually for Lewis dave27 (then 5, Yeah right!). It went up in the top of the wardrobe for Xmas and we got a couple of games (for him, you understand) to play on it, including Donkey King Country.
Of course, we had to try it out to make sure it works (again and again and again and again) and soon got hooked on the bloody little git. I remember I couldn't break the hold the console had on me for months on end and and spent every Sunday afternoon trying to get onto that elusive NEXT STAGE. I just HAD to finish the whole game, which I eventually managed to do, although I did hate the section down in the mines where they faced some particularly nasty pieces of crocodile work. I managed to find the cheat that got me round that particular problem pretty early on I'm glad to say.
I remember Bethany dave27 bouncing along in one of those hammock like baby seats with us unable to do anything but gaze intently into THE BOX while we watched DK and Diddy do their stuff. Aaaah, salad days...
After that little escapade I was hooked and I still think DKC is one of the best games ever.
We soon started getting a load of other titles for the console and I remember thinking Formula 1 was the bees' knees when I 'borrowed' it off Rick 3p Macdougall (don't ask).
We were pretty miffed (spot the understatement) when we found Nintendo weren't making any more games for the machine and were going down the route of a new console. We had to sit there revelling in the glory that was Earthworm Jim and that unfathomably hard underwater globe race.
Among the other games we had were Super Mario and that was a really irritating little brute of a beast.
Now EWJ was one of the better games we found and even got me to leave DK behind and that certainly took a lot of doing.
I love this machine and everything about it. The graphics may look naff when compared to today's all singing and dancing versions, but you can't beat a good game. My controls and my thumbs were soon worn to a frazzle by this little demon. Shame it's a relic these days...
You can still get some games via the second hand market and swaps, but everything's swapped on to new consoles these days and it looks like the N64 we bought about 18 months ago is also on the way to the antiques mart - what nice people the Nintendo bods are...
Still who cares, the SNES is still going strong in Bethany dave27's clutches and me and Mrs D still prefer its sedate pace to the N64 - all those 3D, multi view options make our addled old brains throb...
Advantages: great games across all genres, excellent graphics, great control pad Disadvantages: some crap games...it ended all too soon
...my Super(and indeed it is) Nintendo waaaaay back in the christmas of 1993...or was it 1995? 1993 was the year methinks. I recieved it from my parents with a copy of Super Mario World, Joe & Mac and Jurassic Park(the game that clinched my suspicions I would be getting a SNES for christmas...when they bought that, they had to buy something for me to play it on!). Jurassic Park was way too scary for me, then a mere...lemme think...erm...9? 2001...2000..1999...1998...ermegod...no...8? ... ...while it seemed the Super Nintendo would go on forever. Alas, along came the next generation, along came Sony(Nintendo were originally going to make the PS with Sony and backed down at the last moment - fools...or where they?), the Sega Saturn and the long enduring but admittedly lame and blind N64...and the SNES was swept away. His little brother remained(in the form of the gameboy) but the SNES will always have a special place in my heart.

Advantages: Good quality games, Cheap. Disadvantages: Dated looking graphics in many games, Harder to get than newer consoles/games.
...megadrive in late 1990 by Nintendo the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System - terrible name really :) went on to sell around 46 million copies worldwide. By 1997-98 however the console had just about ended with most people having either moved onto another console or simply losing interest in this one, having said this however there are still a number of people who own them to this day and still enjoy playing them, for most people however emulation ... ...--Competition-- At the time the main competition for the SNES was from Sega with their Megadrive, in my opinion however the SNES beat it almost every time, while the Megadrive certainly had a range of interesting games I found that I preferred the ones offered on the SNES, preffered the controllers and generally preffered the look of the console and various other things, the Megadrive was good but I felt the SNES beat it easily. --Controller-- This ...

Advantages: Revolutionary Graphics (at the time) innovative controller Disadvantages: Cartridges were expensive (especially import)
...But the thing that Nintendo had in Spades was gameplay, every Nintendo title was rammed with the kind of gameplay that hooked you in and kept you hooked till it was way beyond the time you should have gone to bed. It had all the genres sewn up and for every one you could probably name about 3 classic games for each one. You want RPG’s try Zelda Final Fantasy or Secret of Mana, how about platform? Try Super Mario world or Yoshis island? Racing? ... ...games.
After the SNES Nintendo kind of lost their way partly due to their stipulation of sticking with cartridge and secondly the games weren’t released that often for the N64 and the thirdparty software support wasn’t there, luckily the gameboy saved them and still continues to support Nintendo in their efforts to stage a very big comeback in the coming year as anyone who has seen the gamecube in action will testify, the old masters ...

Advantages: Only one of the best consoles ever released Disadvantages: Could have had a few more games
...in this case. The Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which was also known as the SNES, was originally released in Japan in 1990 and was an instant hit, the initial shipment selling out within hours. In Japan it went by the name of Super Famicom, Famicom being short for "Family Computer". It was not long before the US got their hands on it, in 1991. The UK and rest of Europe finally had to wait no longer when in 1992, they were treated to a little ... ...use of a multitap.
Nintendo were however keen to prevent importing of games by introducing regional lockouts. There were 2 measures taken: The first, by checking that the region chip of the game matches that of the console, and second (in later games) whether the consoles video speed (either 50Hz for Europe or 60Hz for NTSC) matched that of the cartridge. US cartridges would not fit in European or Japanese consoles anyway, but Japanese carts would ...

Advantages: Excellent games, excellent graphics/sound Disadvantages: Few left in good working order
...as it was called (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) was released in the early 90's. The build of the console was pretty futuristic.with it's clean sharp curves and simple outlay, hardly anything tacky about it. you had the common on and off switch, reset button and a unusual ject button.this was used to eject the game cartridges from the console.my assumption is,that nintendo did this to prevent people accidently pulling the game cartridge out ... ...socket on the back.the first nintendo console to have a RGB scart cable socket on the back. This would be used for enhanced visuals and sound. On the underside, there is a expansion slot for future add-ons,which sadly never made it outside japan.
The Controller
The Snes Controller was my favourite,as it was simply laid out, precise and didn't feel cheap or tacky.Fitted comfortably in the hands, although some people might find the controller awkward ...

Advantages: Very smart to look at, touch screen an excellent feature Disadvantages: Aimed very much at the younger end of the market
...When I was young I had a NES, followed by a SuperNintendo and I spent many a happy hour on Mario or one of the many other excellent games that were available. When I heard that Nintendo were releasing a handheld console to rival Sony's PSP then I was very interested, so eventually I took the plunge and bought one from eBay, which included a couple of games.
First impressions of the console were very favourable. It is entirely white, reminiscent of the iconic iPod, although Black and Pink version are also available. The console is a flip screen one with the top one invariably providing the main screen for the game and the bottom one a touch screen, which can vary in use depending on the game (for example Super Mario uses the bottom screen for showing progress and selecting power-ups, whereas Worms uses it for weapons selection...

Advantages: wireless Disadvantages: uses up a lot of power
...The classic controller has been made for playing select Wii games
The controller is more or less perfect for playing these games, it fits in to your hand perfectly and uses the SNES button layout with 2 analogue sticks for playing N64 games the controller feels well made and has a very good d-pad. The controller plugs in to your Wiimote making it wireless. This controller connects to the wii mote in place of the nunchuck and therefore there are no wires leading back to the console.
Over the years, Nintendo has innovated with controllers and control schemes that have become industry standards. The Classic Controller blends elements from Nintendo's NES, SuperNES, and N64 controllers.
This controller is light weight and fit comfortably in your hand when you are playing it and its easy to use.
The only downfall is it only...
