So you have just bought your new Nintendo Wii. You have frantically swung your shiney new wii remote like a tennis racket. But somehow this amazing peice of new gaming technology, with its slightly retro looking graphics will also make you realise just how far gaming has developed. Wii sports is a far cry from the original classics of super mario bros and donkey Kong. Luckily for us (and Nintendo's accountants) the wii also contains a virtual console, where you can download all the old nintendo and sega classics for a small(ish) fee. Although in order to fully enjoy all of these titles, with the minimum of hassel you also have to buy the classic controller accessory. (RRP 14.99).
The controller itself is designed in the sleak stylish white plastic style of all wii accessories and indeed the wii machine itself. The design of the controller is simple but effective. In many respects the controller follows the same ganeric controller design seen on other consoles, with a Direction pad on the left and four "fire" buttons on the right. there are also two analogue controls, as seen on the ps2 controller and two sholder buttons. All of which are easily accessable and responive.
One slightly strange feature of the controller is that, although it has a "normal" wire and connection port, it does not plug into the Wii itself but into the wii remote. This arrangement is a slightly cumbersome as it often means the wii remote is dangling down on the floor while you have the classic controller in your hand. Personally, this is of minor discomfort to me but I would imagine it could annoy a few people. I dont understand why Nintendo did not make it either wirelss or just a standard plug in to the console (as the gamecube controllers can do).
Overall this is the only controller that can be used on ALL virtual console games (gamecube controllers can be used most of the time but there are some compatability issues and the layout of the buttons does not work well when playing the older, simpler games). The controller is well made but due to its overall purpose as a minor accessory, it will never set the world alight. A solid and understated addition to your wii collection
