With the Nintendo Wii, you only get one remote control, so this means that if you want to play multiplayer games, you will have to buy extra controllers for the Wii.
It requires 2 AA batteries for it to work. The controller comes with the batteries, so you can get on and play straight away.
The remote control is white, and is big enough to fit nicely into the user's hand, but not too big that all the buttons are inaccessible. On the front there is a D-Pad which can be controlled easily with the users thumb. There are also quite a few other buttons that have different functionalities. There is an 'a' button which is the main button on the controller, and is used to control all the games.
There is also a button with a house on it, which when pressed returns you to the Wii's home page where you can select what you want to do. Either side of this button there are two buttons with a '-' and a '+' sign on them, which are used for gameplay. The two buttons at the bottom of the controller '1' & '2' are also used for gameplay.
On the back, there is another button marked 'b'. This is the secondary button which is used in gameplay. It is easy to control because the controller fits into your hand so that you can easily press all of the buttons.
The controller is shaped so that the batteries are inserted in the back so that all the weight and the shape of the batteries are in your palm so that it is easier to grip. This makes the controller slightly chunkier, which is better for gripping especially when you are trying to play the very active games.
The strap at the bottom is very useful. It simply slips on over your hand onto the wrist, and then a piece of plastic comes down securing it to your wrist. It is there so that when you are playing the controller doesn't slip out of your hand.
There are 4 blue lights at the bottom of the remote. These indicate which player number you are. They are useful when playing multiplayer games, although once you have created characters, you know who everyone is.
There is a speaker in the centre of the remote and this has been placed there so that it gives the effect of surround sound. When you hit the tennis ball in Wii Sports, you can hear the racket swing, and the ball being hit. Also within the control, there is a vibrator so that when you hit something it will vibrate and give you feedback. I think that these two features are extremely good and make the Wii's controller one of the best around.
The concept of the controller is exceptional. The hand moves on the screen according to how you move the controller. The controller is responsive so long as you do not go out of range from the receiver.

i'M still undecided about this console! I think I just want it for the novelty but am worried it will wear off quickly! Great review of the controller but I've heard there's problems with the strap breaking which I can't understand lol :)

To be honest, I hated the Wii when they were announcing it and talking about all of the cool innovative stuff. It all sounded tacky and poor. However, after seeing how well executed it is - glitch free, unlike the Eyetoy - it is high on my wishlist

by beginners and pros alike. Sensors determine where the Wii Remote's position is in 3-D space, which means that racing-game steering and a tennis swing, for example, are done through movements of your hand rather than by just your thumbs. What's more, a tiny speaker built into the Wii Remote promises some interactive surround sound experiences. The controller also has a force feedback Rumble feature and an expansion port for use with accessories, such as the Nunchuck (sold separately), which adds an analogue thumbstick and trigger buttons.

all ages and all abilities, Nintendo wanted to create a controller that was as inviting as it was sophisticated. The outcome is the Wii Remote controller. Nintendo fused the familiarity of a remote control with the sophistication of motion-sensing technology to come up with an input device for the ages! Sporting the size of a traditional remote control, the wireless Wii Remote controller is a multifunctional device that is limited only by the game designer's imagination. In a tennis game, it serves as your racket you swing with your arm. In a driving game, it serves as your steering wheel. For first-person shooters, the remote acts as your weapon that you point at an enemy. The list of potential uses goes on and on. Using Bluetooth technology, the wireless Wii Remote controller sends your actions to the Wii console from as far as 30 feet away. As a pointing device, the controller can send a signal from as far as 15 feet away. Up to four Wii Remote Controllers can be connected at once, making for some great multiplayer fun! In addition to its pointing and motion-sensing abilities, the Wii Remote controller also includes a speaker and expansion port for additional input devices, such as the Nunchuk controller.

a multifunctional device that is limited only by the game designer's imagination. The magic of the Wii Remote's design lies within; acellerometers inside the controller body measure movement in all directions and at all speeds. In a tennis video game, it serves as your racket as you swing your arm for a long forehand or a quick and hard backhand. In a 4x4 driving game it serves as a steering wheel, allowing you to swerve to avoid obstacles or pickup power-ups. In first-person shooters, the Wii Remote acts as a firearm that you can point directly at an on-screen enemy. The list of potential uses is enormous, and the light weight of the Wii Remote allows gamers to play for hours without feeling fatigued. The Wii Remote is equally comfortable in right and left hands and houses just the right number of buttons for gaming- not so many that new players will get confused, but enough so that Wii games don't feel constrained. On the face of the remote are the D (or "plus") pad, a large "A" button which is used for major on-screen actions, and two small options buttons. Between the game buttons are a plus and minus buttons (which often act as "forwards" and "back"), as well as a "Home" button to engage the Wii home screen to change settings or check remote battery levels. On the back side of the controller is a trigger-like "B" button, perfect for timing releases of a bowling roll in Wii Sports.Thankfully, battery life is excellent with the two included AA batteries, just as with the previous generation of Nintendo wireless controllers.Wii Remote FeaturesBluetooth Wii Remote Control Maximum controller connections: 4 Operating distance: 5 meter Size: 148mm (L) x 36.2mm (W) x 30.8mm (D) Pointer: Pointing function Motion sensor function Oscillating function Buttons: A, B, - (Minus), + (Plus), Home, 1 and 2 Extension unit connectable Speaker Player indicator

Remote and get ready. The Nunchuk controller and the accelerometer contained within it are the next leap in gaming. In first-person shooters, the controller carries the burden of movement, freeing you to aim and fire using a more natural motion with the Wii Remote. In a football game, you can make your quarterback elusive with the Nunchuk controller while you look for an open receiver to throw to using the Wii Remote.

friends and family. Wii Play consists of a selection of nine very different mini-games on one game, which are designed to help you master the unique Wii Remote, whilst also providing hours of entertainment. To ensure you can enjoy Wii Play with your friends, the game comes bundled with a free Wii Remote. Wii Play consists of a variety of quirky games that can be played either alone or with a friend. This includes Shooting Range, which is the first game unlocked and is reminiscent of the classic Duck Hunt (released on the NES). In order to unlock the next game the player simply needs to complete the previous one (this sequence continues throughout). When all of the games have been unlocked players can start earning medals for their performance.Find Mii involves picking the right face out of a crowd in an environment that constantly changes - it's a race against the clock and each other! Pose Mii requires players to make their Mii characters fit into the shapes in the Wii bubbles. To do this they must swing the remote to the right angle to make it fit inside. The psychedelic colours and quirky graphics involved in this puzzle make it instantly addictive.Other games included are Charge, where players have to hold onto a rampaging bull and try not to fall off! Players steer their bull and make it jump by moving the Wii Remote in the right direction, attempting to knock over scarecrows on the way. Tanks, which also makes use of the Nunchuk controller, tests a player's strategic skills encouraging them to leave trails of mines for other tanks to stumble across.Wii Play also features faithful recreations of real sport games demanding precision and skill with the Wii Remote. In Table Tennis players hold the Wii Remote like a bat and use it to move their on-screen character's hand and return balls. In Fishing players cast their line with similar moves as they would in real life and then wait for a bite before jerking the remote back to hook and reel in a fish. As a pub favourite, Billiards will be an instant hit with older Wii owners. In this game players hold the remote like the back of a snooker cue and use a smooth sliding motion to hit the cue ball. Finally Laser Hockey is a cross between air hockey and ping-pong. Gentle flicks of the wrist are picked-up by the Wii Remote making the pace of the game as relaxed or as frantic as required. Wii Play takes simple concepts and demonstrates how much fun they can be by using the Wii's unique control mechanism. The Wii's unique Mii channel also allows players to build their own customised avatar that can then star as the central character in Wii Play and other games.More Arcade FightSticks and Arcade Video Games
