When my twins were born in 2002, I initially bought an umbrella fold Maclaren' twin traveller'. I chose that due to it being very narrow (which later became a disadvantage) It seemed fine until it began to get very difficult to steer when my boys became around 10 months. On top of that, the whole buggy collapsed at a year old!
So, I then had to find a replacement buggy. Mothers at my local twinsclub recommended 3 wheeler prams, as they are easy to push with bigger toddlers in. My priorities were; must be light to push, good on grass and pavement, still be good for shopping and comfortable for my boys. If it fit through the front door, that would be a bonus!
I narrowed my choices down to the mothercare 3 wheeler (around £200) and the instep nipper .(around £300) I even stopped people in the street that had these buggies to ask about them!! In the end we opted for the nipper because;
-at 9kg, it is the one of the lightest all terrain pushchairs on the market -at 77cms, it is much narrower than the mothercare (80+cm) -looks very sporty and easy to clean -excellent recommendations
We paid £299 for it, and initially we had problems with the seat. After 12 days, one collapsed! After phoning the manufacturer, we discovered that a small number of these pushchairs have a fault and are missing a cap on the seat frames. The service was excellent and 24 hours later we recieved a new seat and a free accessory! Since then we have had the pram a year and have had no further problems.
Basically, an all terrain pushchair is a 3 wheeler buggy with larger than usual air filled wheels like a bike has. They can puncture, although mine haven't yet (I put tyre slime in the wheels when i bought it, you can get this from Halfords)
The idea is that you can go over most terrains without much effort, and as the wheel is fixed, the buggy goes steadily forward, rather than needing to be constantly steered as with swivel wheels. One of my initial concerns was in fact that the was the front wheel is fixed. This was however no problem. The buggy is so light and you just put pressue on the handle bar to turn. To turn sharply, you lift the buggy back slightly and turn, but it is no effort at all. The design of an atp (all terrain pushchair) is that the seats are styled that it bears the weight at the back (the seats are angled slighlty back) which makes it very easy to lift and steer.
This buggy has a large pull down hood or sun canopy which can be pushed right back or pulled right forward. There is a viewing window in the hood. I did not need an additional sun cover. The rain cover is included and is of the much easier frameless variety. It fits into one of the pouches underneath or can be partially attatched to the canopy hood and rolled back.
The nipper has multi seat recline. It has a strap with a clasp that when you release it, the seat reclines. This is adjustable. It goes from full recline to upright. There is a seat pad that comes with the buggy, but you may want to add a cosy toes. You can buy the instep ones or use a standard one. There is a 5 point harness on each seat. The straps are maybe a little on the large side even when on the tightest setting, but do contain my boys! The canvas seats may look less comfy than a padded style seat, but this is usual for an atp, the canvas allows the babys back to mould the seat and the material absorbs the shock.
The pushchair folds into a 'z' shape and is very easy to fold. It is quite large when folded but fits into our zafira (with one back seat down) and my mums nissan micra (new style) It is fairly easy to carry from car to house but it could do with a carry handle or strap maybe.
STORAGE-There are 2 pouches with drawstring at the back of the seats that hold about a carrier bag full of shopping each. A changing bag can be hung accross the handle. I purchased the additional shopping basket, which is £16.99 and not a great fit but good for school bags and coats. There are also useful pockets in the hood canopy.
I am very happy with this buggy and my 2 year old twins are still happy and easy to push in it.
Here are my overall views;
STEERING- easy and very light to push TERRAIN- fine for beach, hills, pebbles, grass, yet also town shopping COMFORT-very comfy for my boys COST- expensive but worth every penny SUITABLE-from birth, you may need the newborn inserts, but a footmuff would do, i used my maclaren ones and they fit SAFETY-you MUST NOT go jogging or over rough terrain with a baby until they have head control. NOT SURE POINTS-steering does get a little heavier with older toddlers in, but is still MUCH lighter than the alternatives, handlebar easily gets nicked, could be more shopping space included, straps could be better fit.
Advantages: Very easy to push and steer, lightweight, lots of room for shopping! Disadvantages: None
I bought this pram to ferry around my almost 2 year old and our newest addition to the family! We chose the red model with 2 optional extras - the tray and 2 matching footmuffs.
On delivery I was truly surprised at how lightweight it was - even at 8 months pregnant I had no problems lifting it out of its box. It needed only minimal assembly and was soon set up in our living room.
The seats do look quite narrow, especially when compared to a single ... ...obvious that, whilst not the roomiest of seats, they are none the less not cramped at all. My daughter is a BIG 2 year old (in 3-4 and 4-5 clothing) and she fits in just fine. The seats lay almost flat and our newborn was fine without a head support (we did buy a separate one anyway but did not need it). The adjustment of the seat back is done via straps at the back of each seat. The straps have a clip in the middle so you can have 2 positions set, ...

...anything UNTIL I found the Nipper Double.
I gave it a thorough examination in the shop - tried the twins in it - tried it in the car - the works! I soon discovered that I liked it very much!
~WIDTH~ 77cm wide
~WEIGHT~ 9kg (ultra lightweight)
~PRICE~ £299 (can be bought on-line for less)
At 77cm wide it's one of the narrowest twin buggies on the market and I have yet to find a shop doorway that I can't get it thru'. At 9kg it's THE lightest twin ... ...any major effort.
The Nipper has a large pull up/down hood which has a viewing hole which can be covered if needs be. On either side of the hood there are zipped pockets which are ideal hor purse/keys/wipes/tissues etc.
In the UK we haven't needed an additional sun canopy however we did purchase a protect-a-bub shade for our holiday and it was fantastic and made a huge difference.
The Nipper comes with 2 co-ordinating seat pads which protect the ...

Advantages: COMPACT & LIGHTWEIGHT Disadvantages: Haven't come across any as yet!
...one of which was the Nipper Double.
The Nipper Double is 77cm wide and therefore narrow enough to get thru' most shop doorways, I can also get it onto my local low floor bus into town which I wasn't able to do with my previous model.
It's a dream to push and steer which surprised me is the front wheel is static and I thought this would make it difficult to manouvre but it's so lightweight it's a doddle to get around with.
I love the large sun ... ...multi positional and lie completely flat for a new baby, the stroller comes complete with seat pads which will protect the seat long term, there are brilliant drawstring type built in bags attached to the rear of the seats and you can also buy a basket to fit underneath.
Best of all is the weight of the stroller - a mere 9kg (almost 10kg lighter than other's we'd looked at), I can lift it single handed into the boot of our Mondeo (still plenty of ...

Advantages: Lightweight, quite narrow, reclines almost flat, easy to steer, fairly easy to fold, good rain cover, good shocks, quick release wheels, rigid rear parking brakes. Disadvantages: Dangerous, uncomfortable for older babies, too small for large toddlers, poor quality, fiddly seat adjust, rubbish sun canopy, poor storage capacity.
I bought this buggy for my twins as it's about the only affordable 3 wheeler available in the UK and my sister-in-law raved about it.
However, in my opinion it is positively dangerous. The weight is all balanced over the rear axle which makes it very easy to push and steer - BUT means it will fall over backwards at the slightest gust of wind or knock from a toddler (eg). And don't even think about hanging a change bag on the back! My twins were ... ...never looked that comfortable. Now, at 8 months, they just scream every time I try to put them in it. The bar across the front of the seat is not good for that in-between size of child.
The seats do not adjust to a very upright position and the straps for adjusting them are very fiddly and so near to the ground that you have to bend double to use them. The wheels are too small for serious off-road use (though the shocks are pretty good). The overall ...
