My first review!!! Lets see how I get on; any tips will be greatly appreciated!
I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what to write about first and eventually decided on the topic that is proving to be one of the main things on my mind at the moment. Giving up smoking!
Well, lets start with a bit of background:
I'm now 25 (and I'm already starting to feel old) and decided at 12 that smoking would be fun! Now we know why people say that kids aren't old enough to make responsible decisions!
Anyway, over the years there have been several half hearted attempts at quitting but most have failed before the end of the first day! In my late teens, early 20's it was more a token gesture to keep my mum happy rather than a serious
attempt at stopping for good!
Anyway, the last year or so I've really started thinking about the damage I'm doing to my body, not to mention the cost of the damn things these days!
Basically I've had a couple of trips to the doctors in the last year with respiratory illnesses and she says they're strongly linked to my smoking and that I should quit. Well, lets be honest, she would say that and I'm not one for being told what to do, however, I also don't enjoy being ill so this is where this review comes in I suppose...........
The product I have chosen to review is the Niquitin Clear patch - Step 1. It is a 24 hour patch and it works by delivering nicotine through the skin throughout the day to replace the nicotine you used to get from cigarettes in order to reduce your cravings and unpleasant symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
First off then the appearance of the patch.......
Well, it's about 2" by 2" give or take and is see through, hence the Clear part of its name. However, just like clear bra straps it is not invisible and as much as it may act as an early warning system to passers by that you may be very irritable, it is not something that I would want showing.
Therefore I had been applying the patches to the upper parts of my arm and not wearing strappy tops! I did apply to my thigh on one occasion but we'll come on to that later.....
So after applying the patch what next........
Well I was hoping it would be business as usual but without the fags, although I kind of new that wouldn't be the case! Basically after about 15 minutes my arm started to feel really itchy and uncomfortable where the patch was applied. But I thought to myself I can't give up quitting because of an itchy arm, can I? No!
I tried to put it to the back of my mind and luckily something else appeared there to replace it! The urge to smoke! Grrrrrr. At this point I felt the urge to press the patch harder (my thinking was that the harder you press the more nicotine it'll give you..... but it doesn't work). At the end of the day you need willpower and lots of it too if you're going to be successful.
Unfortunately, I also started to find that itchiness was not the only side effect of the patch, it also made me feel quite light headed and nauseous at times which was very unpleasant. The box does tell you this but I was hoping that I'd get away without experiencing it.
Another side effect I experienced was a numb feeling on whatever limb the patch was applied to. Now, on the arm this was bearable if a little annoying but when I applied it to my thigh to give my arms a break it was not! I was hoping that maybe if I put the patch somewhere else I wouldn't get the same side effects...... yet another rubbish idea. My right leg went really numb and felt awful! Luckily I was at home at the time and removed it after about an hour but my leg hurt for ages afterwards! Not good!
Anyway, as you may well have guessed by now the patches didn't work too well for me. I used them for 4 days and then stopped. I found them uncomfortable to wear and I still had big cravings to smoke. Now, I knew I would have the cravings and its not the patches fault that my willpower wasn't up to the job, however, the irritation they caused was the excuse I needed to stop trying.
In a way I think that if I'd have just gone cold turkey I may have had more success because I managed to justify to myself that it was ok to smoke because the patches were uncomfortable.
Having said all that I would still recommend them to others as giving up smoking is a complex, important and tough thing to do and I'm sure that some people would benefit from using these so I wouldn't want to put them off totally by reading this.
Anyway, that's the end of my first review and unfortunately I'm now off for a fag but I will try again soon and good luck to anyone else who's trying to quit at the moment.
