OK! The alcohol has been cut down, I've given up caffeine, the healthy eating is going ok and now we're going for the biggie...THE Fags! I'm beginning to feel a bit like that old Adam Ant song.'Dont drink, Dont smoke...what do you do?' But the facts are: 1. I'm killing myself, with the amount of heart disease and cancer in the family I'm on a real winner. 2. I smell, I stink out my house, my parents house, my partners house and they are all sick of it, so am I 3. I'm addicted to and dependeant on 20 little white sticks a day, how sad is that? 4. We're poor, even when we were living on £74 a week I managed to find £4 a day for cigarettes, talk about selfish.
Good enough reason right? But then you should have seen me justifying spending £17.49 for a weeks worth of patches! It seems a lot to fork out in one go, but is only 3-4 days worth of cigarettes.
About
the product: NiQuiting CQ comes in 3 strengths, Step 1 is for those who smoke more than 10 a day, Step 2 for 10 or less and Step 3 is for the very last 2 weeks and gives you a very low dose of nicotine. If you start on Step 1 you use those for 6 weeks then Step 2 for 2 weeks then Step 3 for 2 weeks. If you start on Step 2, you use those for 6 weeks and then Step 3 for 2 weeks. The patches are about 1 inch square and are clear so are less noticeable than the old ones. You put them on, preferable hairless skin, where the skin doesnt fold or crease and leave it on for 24 hours. You have to make sure you throw them away careful as they can be toxic to kids or animals.
A word of warning though, because I smoke 20 lights a day I started on Step 1, they proved way too strong and I got a dose of nicotine poisoning which includes nauseau, the place of the patch, itchs, burns and then goes numb, dizziness and very vivid dreans. But dont give up, you just have to find the one suitable for you and for me its starting with Step 2. There are a few side effects still, itching around the patch, dizziness immediately after putting it on, they can also cause insomnia if put on late at night. But these side effects do disappear after a few days.
NiQuiting CQ is more than just the patches though, you get a really helpful booklet with loads of info such as how the patch works, what to expect when giving up such irriatability, sleep disruption, trouble concentrating, increased appetit and the dreaded weight gain, anxiety, cigarette urges, but these are symptons of nicotine withdrawel, not the patches and they dont last long. It also reminds you that NiQuitin CQ is not a magic cure, it helps with the physical, not the mental, but they also help with this!!
There is a Freephone number to ring 0800 092 9392 to ring, you can even ring this before you give up, you speak to a counseller who helps devise a plan for you. You then get a diary with your personal plan which is full of advice, you then get regular advice and encouragement, you can also ring them at any time for a bit of motivation if you think you are going to lapse. You can also register online at www.niquitincq.com. There is a questionnaire to help choose the best plan for you, you can then go on the quitters website to look at your plan which has loads of info and tips, you also get weekly encouraging e-mails, on the site there is also masses of information you couldnt get in the booklet and via a person. The downside is there is no 'real' person to talk to, but you can still ring up the freephone number for a bit of 'live' encouragement.
Today is my 6th day as a non-smoker, with the aid of the patches it is going well, yes the cravings are still there but thats because the patches have about half the nicotine your body is used to. Its the habit that is the hard bit, after a meal, waiting for the bus etc, but lickily no-one around me is a smoker, my delegated smoking support partner (who also gets weekly e-mails to help him support me) boyfriend Alam is being wonderful, the test will come in 2 weeks time when I go back to uni, but hopefully the cravings will be more manageable! Some of the benefits are already showing, I no longer get so breathless, your cough does get worse for a few days and my sense of smell and taste havent improved yet because I have a stinking cold and I have more money!
For those of you who havent decided to give up smoking yet I'm going to review Allen Carrs book which may just persuade you.
I would greatly appreciate some suggestions and support to chat with those who have also decided to give it up, just e-mail me!
