The thought of giving up smoking is likely to make you feel ill and in some cases positively terrified. Patches are a good alternative whilst on the long road to recovery. They can be hidden, cost less than fags and still provide you with a smoke free nicotine fix. Other methods such as gum and inhalators taste foul and are no good for heavier smokers.
>> What’s the deal? <<
Smokers of ten or less cigarettes per day should start their road to recovery on Step 2 of the NiQuitin CQ patches. This is also the next step after users of Step 1 patches have completed the first six weeks of the programme. If you have been using the Step 1 patches, the treatment time of Stage 2 will only be two weeks. However, if you are initially starting the whole NRT programme from Stage 2 the patches will have to be used for around six weeks until Stage 1 can be achieved. Stage 2 patches contain 14mg of nicotine.
>> Advantages <<
§ The patches come with a committed quitters stop smoking plan which can help you plan for times of weakness and build up a profile of your own personal reasons for giving up
§ Patches are worn for 24 hours so you will get a continuous fix of nicotine in your blood stream
§ No one need know you are wearing a patch as they can be worn on areas such as the shoulder or thigh
§ You still get the dose of nicotine you need but start to drastically reduce all of the health problems associated with smoking
>> Disadvantages <<
§ The patches have a sticky substance so they stick firmly to your body. This can cause slight irritation and I found them to be really itchy
§ Do not smell the sticky side, as it is the worst smell in the world
§ They only work in conjunction with willpower and are not guaranteed to work
§ They cause sleepless nights as the body is not used to nicotine whilst you sleep
§ Can cause nightmares
>> My experience <<
I found the patches to initially be working rather well as I was avoiding the kind of situations where I would smoke most often such as the pub. However, when I thought I was ready to start going back to my normal routine I had real difficulty suppressing the urges and had the “odd” harmless cigarette!
The thing with the patches is that they are not a magical cure and because your body is still addicted to nicotine I found that the urges where stronger than when I gave up two years ago using no NRT at all. I have also read that the success rate of patches is only 20%!
>> Conclusion <<
Overall, I believe that if you really do have the willpower to succeed then these patches could be the answer. The company offers so much help and support through the committed quitters stop smoking plan. My problem was that I do not think my willpower is strong at all…I am Adam in the garden of Eden!!
