Being into street racing, I was not really aware of this car, until its inclusion in the movie "the Fast and the Furious"...
So, I took it on the road, rolled down the windows and rolled back the sunroof...this car's speedometer gauge says 240km/h at the peak end, and it does get there rather quickly, on open road.
This car is built as a rear wheel drive, and was tuned for comfort, rather than sport, so it handles rather well, but not as well as a Skyline or something in that line. It feels rather heavy on the road, but the extra kick of that turbo under the hood quickly hides its flab.
Gas consumption was a little more than I expected, but I quickly learnt that this car was equipped with VVL (Variable
Valve Lift timing) which adjusts its valve timing to the driver's habits and driving style. So, after a month or so of ridiculous fill-ups, the gas bill took a gradual decline.
Inside, my car was equipped with basic black upholstery (which was good enough for me) and considering that this car was a 1997 model, I would say that this car was the luxury sports car of its day. Although mine was not the GT or the fully-loaded model, this car was something which made me fall in love with Nissan all over again.
The car's safety features are damned good, but be sure to maintain it, because I can say from experience, this car skidded off the highway, flipped about 5 or 6 times and I walked away without a scratch - literally.
Word of caution to potential owners - this car is high maintenance and specialised maintenance, at that, too. So, beware of who is working on your precious SR20 motor and if it doesn't have one, install a turbo timer ASAP! Trust me, your turbo (and your wallet) will thank you for it.
For those who are into street racing and are looking for a project to throw their effort into:
I have found this to be a car worth considering seriously - after all, it is not a very popular car in terms of there being that many of them on the road. Accessories and uprades are readily accessible (once you know where to look - as opposed to original parts, go figure) and because it was originally designed for the SR20DET motor, RB20 and RB25 motors will fit almost perfectly into the engine bay (in case you are wondering, think Nissan Skyline) with little or no modifications required. Even with the original SR20 motor, it is possible to reach as high as 800 or 900 horsepower with all the possible modifications your wallet and schedule can allow - or so I was informed.
Because of its 2-door coupe design, Lamborghini up-swing door kits can be added on rather easily, with no worries about centre or door support posts.
Rear wheel drive cars are always looked at as being older in design (most newer cars are front wheel driven), sports cars (check most of the sports car you know - Mazda RX7, RX8, Mitsubishi GT3000) or luxury cars (Mercedes Benz, BMW). However, because of this car's sheer power, coupled with its heavy curb weight (or at least, heavy for a 2-door vehicle) and rear wheel drive, this car is a perfect candidate if you want to do drifting or power-sliding.
Even though my car was fitted with an automatic transmission, I must say that it did show its true colours on several occasions, doing 180 and 90-degree turns with rather great ease (for the record, as much as I like street racing, I still get uneasy when my car slides out from under me). For pro-drifters, some might say that this car is a touch unstable, but I prefer to say that this car is understood, because it handles very well. However, because of its power and the rear wheel drive, ensure that your tyres are at their best condition at all times, because with smoother tyres, it is extremely easy for a rear wheel drive car to loose control as opposed to a front wheel drive car.
In the automatic transmission, shifting was not as smooth as one would like, but sports car enthusiasts waiting to purchase a stickshift will appreciate its sportcar-like feel when shifting. The overdrive is a confusing switch for me, since I hardly ever used it, but when it is on, the gears change at lower RPMs, giving the car a more sporty feel and somewhat better gas consumption.
For the few who like to try doing 360s on the street at 2 in the morning, this car does it very well, leaving a series of tyre marks on the asphalt, but be warned - do not try it with an automatic. The transmission will work perfectly - but because you do not have a clutch to help regulate your RPMs, the engine speed can go through the roof, over-pressuring your turbo and back-pressuring your engine.
Because this car is no longer manufactured, I would recommend taking this car to your trusted mechanic before purchasing. Be sure to check for any modifications in the exhaust system, turbo, change of engine and suspension. If all modifications were "bolt-on", then all is well (bolt-on modifications are components which require no modification of the vehicle itself and can simply be bolted onto the vehicle). Exhaust modifications are suspect, since exact modifications may not be easily identifiable or reversible. If an engine swap was done (such as replacing the SR20DET with a RB25DETT), be sure to have your mechanic look over the entire engine and engine bay before considering the purchase. Sometimes engine mounting brackets may have to be moved or welded on before the bigger engines can be mounted, so engine modifications should be viewed with caution. Body-wise, all normal rules apply, in terms of paint, rusting, etc.
However, once your trusted mechanic gives the all-clear, I would recommend this car to anyone - oh, and for the record, my car was "lady-driven" before I purchased it...so this car is really for anyone.

Wow, a real life street racer, I feel honoured. I should add to this that I've carried out all the maintenance on my 200sx throughout my 2 years of ownership and that I have absolutely no idea what your going on about.
They are not hard to work on, they are not high maintenance and they are not specialised maintenance.
Good to see you rolled yours, heres to you not owning another one for a while. People like yourself are far better off and less of a danger to the public in Rover Metros.

Unfortunatly that was a very poor review givin by what it looks like the king of chavs. How to become a complete tool and ruin a good cars image this should be called.

I hope that nobody takes this seriously as a buyer’s guide even if you are a fully paid up “street racer”! Give me strength. My favourite bits:

Advantages: A Quirkey Unique model that is hard to find a fault with. Disadvantages: Been an owner too long and hard to think of something I dont like..
