The Nissan Patrol provides all the functionality of a true off-road vehicle (unlike the likes of BMW and Mercedes) whilst retaining comfort, control and all the facilities you expect in your usual Ford or Vauxhall.
The model I drove (Nissan Patrol GX 3.0 Diesel) would cruise happily at 100MPH and still have the handling you would expect in a normal coupe.
At normal speeds, this engine provides about 25MPG.
As standard, this model comes with full Climate Control (with Sunlight balancing [adjustment for the radiated heating effect of direct sunlight]) with external/internal temperature display, ABS, Power Steering, Power Assisted Clutch, All-round Electric Windows, Electric Sunroof, 6-CD Stereo, Electic Heated Seats, Electonic compass plus 7 seats (5 normal seats plus 2 fold-up seats [with proper seatbelts])
Safety is enhanced with both driver and passenger Front and Side SRS Airbags. Security is standard with a full engine imoboliser and remote locking.
The Engine within this model is a 3 Litre Turbo Diesel married up to a 5 speed gearbox. To the left of the regular gearstick is the 4-wheel-drive selecter that allows you to switch (at up to 25mph) between Rear-wheel Hi, 4-Wheel Hi and 4 Wheel Lo. In addition, you can 'Lock' the differentials in order to escape from a mud track, or to improve traction when on snow, ice or slick mud. For balance, the driver can enable the "Stabi Off" button, which when activated, will disengage the rear suspension dampeners in order to let the body roll up to 45 degrees perpendicular to the body. To give you an example, you could drive sideways along a motorway embankment with the passenger wheels high up the bank, the drivers wheels on the hard shoulder, and the body of the vehicle level.
All this technical information does not tell you what it is really like to drive...... Awesome.... Fantastic... Scary (for all the other drivers!) - you sit about 3 feet higher up than everyone else, your headlights are level with a Fiesta's back window, and *everyone* will move out of your way.
I just love this motor!
As for reliability - I have never had a problem in 70,000 miles. Besides, how many BMW X5's did you see driving through Afganistan with UN stamped up the side? :o)
Advantages: Testing the buyer's nerves ! Disadvantages: Multi-challenge to one's joy from having a new car !
I like the FL2 looks, akin to a Range Rover, which, misleadingly induce a belief of similar qualities. I purchased the car in March 2008 and 2 months later the clutch disintegrated in some ridiculously easy sandy terrain. I can say this in comparison to my NissanPatrol towing a 2.5 ton speed boat to launch from sandy beaches.
Highly acclaimed Terrain Response feature ? A GIMMICK !
Land Rover Recovery ? A bunch of ill-manered, inefficient and incompetent people, highly agravating when you desperately need someone to help you.
Land Rover after-sale management ? Worse than their Recovery team, but with sharp abilities in distributing blame and avoiding responsibility. DRIVING ANYWHERE OTHER THAN TARMAC: DRIVER ERROR !!
Latest surprise : FL2 has just been recalled due to a serious FIRE HAZARD !!
ANY BUYER PLEASE ??? ...
Advantages: very cheap to run Disadvantages: can give trouble in the wet.
I got a Pride S in November last year as my other car is a nissanpatrol and I needed something that would do more than 20 miles to tha gallon. since then I have done over 25000 miles in my wee kia and get around 45 to the gallon.
The only problem I have had with it is due to the location of the ignition coil which is prone to getting wet. I have had to clean it and squert WD40 all over it and in the end resorted to covering it with a plastic bag to keep the water from splashing up onto it.
I have been so impressed with the value for money that this car gives me I will get another when this one is 2 years old. ...

Advantages: good trade in price Disadvantages: poor quality after service, treated like dog toffee after you have paid
i bought a nissanpatrol on a 04 plate from arnold clarke leyland( acl ) ,. within a week i noticed that the switch to engage/ disengage the stability bar would not operate. i took i in to acl and was told to contact a local nissan dealer as the vehicle was still in warranty. the local nissan dealer said i was not down to them but it was down to acl to put right. they took my car off me and sent it to their own dealership specialising in nissan based in liverpool. this was -at the time of writing- 11 days ago with no sign yet of a return. they lent me in its place a filthy toyota yaris. i have asked for something more in keeping with my vehicle and was offered a mazda 6 with mega miles that was ready for the crusher. i am still driving the yaris. i have been to see the sales manager who seems to think it is funny. the girl who works ...
