Since my wife converted me from Vauxhall to Nissan circa 1993, I have never bought (or even considered) buying anything but a Nissan. I purchased my S-reg Nissan Primera 1.6GX A/C 5 door hatchback in Jan 2000 to replace my P-reg Almera, as I needed a bigger car having 2 young children.

The car has proved to be extremely reliable and a through joy to drive. As part of the role (I work as an IT consultant), I often have to travel around the country. The company I work for provides hire cars rather than company cars so during my time, I have driven Peugeot 306 & 406, Rover 400, Vauxhall Astra & Vectra, Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat and the only one that I would say is a better driving experience is the Passat (although this had EXTREMELY light power steering).
The Primera is not a head turner - it looks from the outside pretty boring. But inside, the cockpit is functional, comfortable and pleasant, with the seats providing a very comfortable and relaxing driving position for any driver. Driving is a pleasure - the car responds to you. The power steering is just right and the gear change is slick and efficient (as you come to expect from Nissan). The 1.6 engine is responsive without being nippy - you won't be bragging about its 0-60 mph figures but there again it won't let you down. As usual, the 'goodies' list is quite high - front electric windows, remote central locking, air conditining.
Fuel economy is average - about 32mpg urban and 38 mpg on the motorway and servicing costs are reasonable. Word of warning here though - I recently moved to the Fylde coast and contacted my local Nissan franchise for a service quote. They told me it was £200 - I contacted the dealer I bought it from and they quoted me £137! When I questioned this, the Fylde dealer said that the costs provided by Nissan are 'indicative costs' only - in other words, shop around! The car has acres of room - for the parents in you, I can easily get 2 suitcases, baby buggy and other 'odds n sods' in the boot without any difficulty. There is ample room for 4 adults or 2 adults/2 child seats and the doors open wide enough so that you can sit in leg first rather than head first.
Have now enjoyed the Nissan Primera1.6 16v gx a/c for the past 2 years and can recommend the car as utterly reliable, economical, and comfortable. Like all durable purchases the choice was a combination of the above factors. It is used for long journeys of 5 hours or more and beats many other cars in terms of convenience and confort. The negative side for a 'driver' who enjoys motoring is a slighly underpowered engine calling for full throttle in ...

...a remote control for a nissan anti theft system which locks alarms and immobilises the car, very handy indeed.
On costs of running, it is very good with the petrol, the engine itself is a 16 valver that actually likes to be revved, but when it is, the noise it makes is so boring it almost matches the interior. Throttle response is good and the motor is pokey without being rapid. With regular driving i get about 35 mpg, which aint bad.
To look at, ... ...weird while I do feel it.
So overall, a good car? yes, a great car? no. Reliability wins the day really, as even servicing is cheap on the primeras now. It will keep on going, and i'm afraid not many but the nissan can say that. ...

Advantages: Great fuel economy, Ideal family car Disadvantages: Plain and unstylish
We've had a Nissan Primera (M/1994 registration) since 1995. It is the 16.LX Hatchback model. I believe this the Mk II variety. It currently has approximately 166000 miles on the clock. This truly is a most reliable vehicle. In the 12 years we have owned it, we've only encountered a few problems with it:
As many say, the Nissan Primera is a bland and unstylish car, but I'm quite frankly happy to drive such a vehicle. This also has the advantage, ... ...thieves would want to steal with that kind of image. (Not that it would be that easy to steal with a factory-standard engine immobiliser.)
As previously stated in the 12 years of ownership and with 166000 miles driven, the following are the only notable problems we've encountered.
1x Leaking radiation, 1x Clutch replacement, 1 x Alternator replacement, 1 x Handbrake caliper replacement and 2 x Exhaust replacements. The rest of the repairs I would ...

The Nissan Primera is a good family car. It has a number of extras, which are standard such as Power steering, Electric Windows and ABS. The three year warranty is also an advantage when buying the car new, it is also an advantage when buying a nearly new Primera as the warranty can be transferred to the new car owner.
With all these positive points, why is the Primera not a best seller. The main reason is its image which is dull.
Best to buy the ...

...a distributer which mine did Nissan put different models of distributors on their cars therefore finding the right one is a serious hassle, and dont even think about buying one from a dealer as it costs in excess of £300. However, there are spare parts available easily so most times a cheaper part can be found. I have a LX model which means for its age it has lots of extras such as ABS, fuel injection, CAT, headrests in back, full electric windows ... ...car. As for myself my nissan has plenty of life left init and even though its around the clock I would not consider replacing it. In recent surverys by motor associations it received 98 out of 100 for reliability and which rates it very highly. One thing potential buyers should consider is the engine size mine is a 1.6 but as the car is solid a 1.8 engine would be more suitable so make sure the engine has not been knackered. ...

Advantages: Drivers Car gone high tech Disadvantages: Not for those who can't set up a video recorder
This will be not so much a full review as a first impression of the new NissanPrimeras.
Having been a NissanPrimera driver for some years, latest being a 1.6 sri I was lucky enough to be invited to our local Dixons dealership for the launch of the new Primeras last month & more importantly this included an all expenses paid trip to Oulton Park Race Circuit to drive the new cars.
So I will try to give an unbiased opinion which should not be too hard because the new Nissans are a total departure from your average box on wheels. Let's start with my first impressions on the launch night. Cue music, lights, dry ice & the new lady appears, shiney, sleek and all sensual curves, looking good from the front but the rear...not to my taste, too bulbous and rather plain.
The model we saw was the 1.8 diesel & a peek under the bonnet ...
Advantages: Quite a few dealers around, cheap servicing. Disadvantages: Hit or miss customer service, bland range of good cars.
I have had variable experience with Nissan dealers over the past 5 years. In 1996 I bought a 1994 Primera1.6LX (see separate opinion) from Mark Kass in Waltham Cross, it was a great car let down by an unprofessional dealer and bitty problems that they didn’t sort out until legal action was threatened. I had several problems with the car which I pointed out when picking it up, such as a funny feeling clutch and and blown bulbs which they had ticked as ok on the PDI. After 2 weeks another problem became apparent, a dislike to starting in the morning. Both these problems could have been sorted quickly, but instead I was told “it doesn’t do it with us”, after 2 weeks the clutch gave up at needed replacement, which they paid after a lot of letters. The starting problem went on for nearly a year before I suggested I ...

Advantages: lots of space, smooth ride, decent handling. Disadvantages: soft seat, no steering height adjustment, rough engine.
When I started a new job in June 2000 I was given a Laguna to use until its lease ran out in the September, before ordering a new car. It had 84,000miles on the clock and was in a bit of a state.
I had to drive it home from Birmingham to Hertfordshire, and found it a smooth motorway cruiser.
After 3 months and a further 12,000miles I had totally change my opinion, not because it was a bad car, but because it didn't suit me. Also I compared it to my previous 2 NissanPrimeras.
Firstly, although 6ft tall I like the steering wheel low, on the Laguna (mine was a 1997 1.8RT a/c) it only adjusted for reach, this meant I had to put up with a high steering wheel. Secondly the seats where far too soft, something I found in my managers new Espace, and a colleagues Scenic.
Another hate after a few thousand miles was it's stiff clutch and over ...
