i was lucky enough to buy one of these mean machines when I was 21. Being 7 years ago I stumped up £8k for a K reg one with a very low mileage as it was a japanese import.
For the first month I had the most fun in my life being 21 I thought I was indestructible. I took too many risks but the sunny just loved to be driven hard. The levels of grip were amazing. On the limit you would have understeer lift off the throttle and the back would jump back in line and off you go again.
0-60 was around 6 secs with 100 approaching at around 15, top end was just under 150mph. It will seat 4 comfortably and also take your luggage. being a hatch back the car can behave like any other hatchback, take your wife to work your kids to school, phone in sick and act like a hooligan...fantastic.
Remember I mentioned that it was for the first month that I had the most fun in my life???? Well after approximately one month The engine blew and when they go they go. It went into a garage for 3 months whilst they fixed various bits and bobs. Obviously its a lot more technical than that but hey ho! 3 months later and £4k lighter I drove my car out of the garage glad to have it back, but it was never quite the same.
To be honest that was it for me and my sunny fun. From then on something went wrong every couple of months and after a year of throwing money at it I had had enough....so what did I do? I flogged it to a friend. Now you may think that i am cruel for doing this but he was well aware of the issues I had had and got it for a very good price. Since he has owned it he has loved it and he has also spent thousands on it. it has 321bhp and is about 200kg lighter, it is a phenominal machine and just goes to show how easy it is to modify. Dont know what it is about Japanese 2.0ltr turbo engines but they are great.
Nowadays you can pick these cars up for approx £3odd thousand which is unbelievable. It may not handle as well as a scooby or evo but you will see less on the road. Performance wise they are amazing and you will embarass supercar owners, maybe not on a straight but hit the twisties and your laughing. Fuel consumption is a big boo with this car 18mpg was about average insurance is not the best (thats being polite) and parts are expensive.
This really is a marmite car, you either love it or hate. Do your research and dont go for the first you see and you could have some amazing fun.
even though i only had one month of fun out of it prior to never ending troubles my memories are fond. If you have the money to throw at it then do it If you dont then avoid like the plague!
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Always good to read a review about someone who loves their car, but for other consumers in the market (mate of mine has just bought the 2 door coupe version from a importer in London) it would be helpful to add details about boot space, comfort levels, any electrics in terms of options, driver comfort, safety etc. If you update your review let me know. I had a Sunny for 6 months before going onto my Nova 1.5TD.

This car is similar to the Nova in that anyone who hasn't owned one slags it off and hates it, branding it a shite car to modify, but anyone who's owned one loves it.
