This bottle has a pump, so the liquid squirts onto you child’s skin. It comes out green, which my son was fascinated by. Instead of trying to rub it off, he wanted to see the green liquid disappear! The sun is out, the sky is blue, and the kids are loving the freedom of the garden after the long wet winter. But are they safe?
"In the UK there are 65,000 cases of skin cancer each year, with 2,000 proving fatal, and numbers are said to be rising faster than for any other form of cancer. Part of the reason is thought to be due to our changing lifestyles, for example more people are sunbathing and taking more holidays in sunnier climates, increasing their exposure to harmful UV rays." Quote from the BUPA web site.
The sun gives off two harmful rays. The first is UVA, which causes skin ageing. It is also thought that UVA increases the risk of malignant melanoma (the most dangerous form of skin cancer). The second is UVB. This is the ray that causes sunburn. (UV stands for Ultra Violet).
It is important that we all use a suncream, but how do you choose which one?
Suncream with a SPF (sun protection factor) is the way to guard against burning. The SPF is measured by the amount of time the skin with sunscreen on will take to burn, when compared to skin without the suncream. E.g. A cream with an SPF of 30 means that it takes 30 times longer to burn.
So, that’s the UVB rays covered, but you need to remember that it is the UVA that causes cancer.
My children love the sun, and I’ve always been lucky in that my children love to wear hats. My daughter is quite good at applying sun cream, but my son really hates it. He always tries washing the cream off when you’ve finished applying it. It is always a long battle getting it put on him in the first place. James also has very sensitive skin, and reacts to just about anything, so we have to be very careful when applying anything to his skin in case his eczema flares up.

It is also water resistant, although you do have to reapply after swimming. At £9.99 for 200ml it is really expensive, but under the circumstances, it had to be worth a try. It is difficult to find suncreams with both UVA & UVB protection. When you get a high SPF, they seem to forget about the UVB protection, so this is pretty good.

It rubs in quickly and easily, which is great, as it doesn’t take long to apply over his whole body. I also found the shape of the bottle quite handy as my hands didn’t slip down the bottle. The cream has a nice, light smell to it, not at all overpowering, which I was quite pleased about, as some sun creams seem to attract the wasps etc.
It also didn’t take much cream to cover his body. About 2 squirts for each arm, 3 for each leg. 1 squirt seems to cover his face and tips of ears. This does mean that a bottle will last quite a while. I reckon this bottle should last me at least the summer.
As with any sun cream I have tried, the sand will still stick to it! It is best to apply the cream at least 15 minutes before letting your little treasure loose on the beach, or in the sand pit. I guess you can’t have it all ways. Also, you need to apply it prior to putting their clothes on if possible, as being water resistant it is very difficult to wash out those lovely green spots. If you do get it on your child’s clothes, if you wipe it off with a damp cloth straight away, it will generally come out.
James hasn’t had any reaction to this cream, and lets me apply it without argument. He has spent ages out in the sun without burning, although he has got some colour to his skin – not sure that is a good thing, but at least there is no sign of redness. I should point out that I don’t always reapply this as often as I should, which is probably why he does have a little bit of a tan, but I do try to keep him out of the midday sun anyway.
The bottle is a nice size. It fits easily into my handbag, and on school days, James takes it to school in his book bag.
I would recommend that this should be reapplied every couple of hours. In the heat, when your child is sweaty (something James suffers terribly from), they will sweat off the cream. It also needs reapplying after swimming.
Other things to remember when a child is in the sun, is that they must wear a hat, and have plenty to drink. It is dehydration that causes sun stroke. You also need to use protection every day during the summer, even when the sun is not shining. It is amazing how strong the sun can be, even through the clouds.
I would highly recommend this product for all children. I have even used it myself as I have very fair skin. I like the smell, and I don’t have any fuss when putting it on James.
Hope you found this helpful.

UPDATE:
I have been asked whether this product contains lanolin. It doesn't. My son cannot have products with lanolin as they sting. Hope this helps.
Advantages: Easy to apply, smells, nice, high level of protection Disadvantages: Have to be careful not to get it on your clothes.
...Last year I chose a Nivea sunblock for her and basically kept her out of the direct sun. She started walking some six months ago, and loves to run out in the garden. It’s going to be impossible to keep her out of the sun all the time, and rather mean too! I want her to enjoy the sun, but safely. I’ve been doing a little research on the internet, and one of the more surprising things I’ve learned is that getting severe sunburn once in your child hood ... ...Boots. I ended up choosing Nivea coloured children’s sun spray at £9.99 for 200ml. This was because I found it reasonably priced, it is a trusted brand, water resistant, a coloured spray so you can see where you have put it and it had a very handy shape to the bottle.
The bottle is a fantastic shape. The bottle is contoured to fit your fingers. I found this very useful as once you get sun cream on your hands they become slippery and it can be difficult ...

The sun spray comes in a bright blue plastic bottle with a green pump spray top and opaque cap, the top unscrews allowing you to get larger amounts of the spray out (which is handy, I’ll explain later) The cream itself is green allowing you to see where the cream has been sprayed before it gradually fades, this allows you to ensure all areas of your ...

...brother on our holiday.
Nivea is a brand that I have always used and never had a problem with, so when I saw that tescos were selling two 200ml spray bottles for just £10, I brought this factor 40 kids product for my bother and a bottle of nivea sun spray factor 20 for the rest of us.

The bottle is made from plastic and has 5 grooves on each side which helps you grip the bottle with wet hands.
Thee spray was nice and easy to apply, didn't smell of anything other than the 'nivea scent' and was just a case of shaking the bottle, depressing the pump button while aimed at the skin (avoiding eyes of course!).
When first applied to the skin, the spray is a green colour which disappears once rubbed in. We found ...

Advantages: Children won't moan when applying - its green Disadvantages: quite costly
My little one is a sun lover, he will spend hours outside if he could. Of course as a mum you worry constantly so i needed a good sun protection. However as my son is 2 he wasn't having any of it until i found the 'hulk spray' as he calls it, now we can apply as needed and we are both happy.
This spray has SPF 30 and UVA protection 3(out of four), both very good although for very young children i'd use a higher factor.
The packaging is really well ... ...sides are contoured to fit the fingers, very good for when you have slippery and sandy hands. And more importantly it appeals to my beast. Its bright blue, with a cartoon child snorkelling on the front.
The liquid itself goes on green (hence the Hulk!) but the colour only lasts for a few minutes much to olivers disgust! It is very runny but i suppose that is necessary to get it out of the pump. You need to spray the liquid on (about three pumps ...

Advantages: Excellent sun protection and the kids love it! Disadvantages: Quite costly
...cream I used last year... Nivea Sun Childrens Sun Spray! Now, what made me choose this in the first place last year? Initially, the colourful and appealing bottle draw my attention! I knew that when applying cream to the kids I needed to be able to get the lotion out without much fuss; the grooves in the bottle and the easy to use pump action appeared to make that quite easy. Also, the 'Nivea' name, a well known brand that has been around for years ... ...I could trust. Reading the bottle a little closer I noticed that it had a green tint to it - great for my little monster who at the time adored everything to do with the Hulk! Also, it was on special offer at the time too! I can't remember exactly how much I paid, but I think it was in the £6 region! Now, that was a bargain, but I'm yet to find it again for such a low price!
Seeing as we live near many beaches I knew it wouldn't be long before we ...
